Zoe has shaped the investigation from within the community, while maintaining a personal connection to John Stewart. That makes the answer to who the Manhunter is more consequential than a standard culprit reveal: John has to weigh what he feels about Zoe against the danger she represents to the people around them.

Episode 4 initially points viewers in several directions, including William Macon and a supposed Hector Hammond. The latter lead collapses when the person is identified as human using alien technology. The larger reveal is Zoe: after appearing to die in an attack, she survives and is exposed as the Manhunter. The Episode 4 recap follows the clues that make Hal and John reassess her role.
Why Zoe was able to mislead Rushville
Zoe’s strength is that she does not exist outside the town’s ordinary relationships. Her connection to the Macon family and to John lets her appear as part of the community rather than as an obvious extraterrestrial threat. That proximity gives the reveal its sting: evidence that once looked incidental now has to be viewed in a new light.
The show does not reduce the character to a clue. Zoe’s relationship with John turns the investigation into an emotional problem as well as a tactical one. Hal sees risks that John is reluctant to confront, while John has to ask whether his own trust made him miss what was directly in front of him.
What Episode 5 says about Zoe’s end
Episode 5 brings the Manhunter crisis into direct conflict. John ultimately kills Zoe, but the decision is framed as a response to an escalating threat rather than an uncomplicated victory. It also leaves the wider case open. Zoe’s identity explains the immediate Manhunter question, but it does not automatically answer every question about the Guardians, the surviving consequences in Rushville or Hal’s future.
