Spoilers for Trespasses Episode 3 follow. The tragedy that shatters Cushla and Michael’s relationship is Michael’s death. After the couple confronts the lies surrounding his marriage and chooses to continue their affair, Cushla returns home to prepare for a weekend with him. Gina then tells her that Michael was shot dead that morning.

The news arrives precisely when Cushla believes their relationship has become more honest. Michael has admitted that he cannot leave his wife, while Cushla has accepted the cost of continuing to see him. The ending destroys that fragile agreement before they can test whether it was sustainable.

Michael’s family forces the truth into the open

Cushla first sees Michael with his wife and son at the hotel. The encounter confirms that the private life he described only in fragments is much more complicated. She cuts off contact, stops working at the bar and tells Gerry that the affair is over.

Michael eventually explains that his wife has experienced severe depression since their son was born and has recently undergone hospital treatment. He says he cannot leave her or place the responsibility for her care on their son. He also admits to three previous affairs, a history Cushla had not known.

Cushla chooses Michael despite the danger

The confession does not give Cushla a clean answer. Michael tells her that she is different and promises not to lie again, but he cannot offer a conventional future. Cushla decides that secret weekends and time at the flat are enough. She returns to the bar, and Michael tells her he loves her.

Their renewed commitment unfolds against warnings that the affair is being watched. Penny tells Cushla that Michael’s legal work makes him a dangerous public figure. A stranger waits near the flat, while an IRA associate asks Gerry questions about Cushla’s romantic life. The threat is political as well as personal.

Michael’s shooting turns every warning into a consequence

Cushla does not witness the shooting. That choice makes the final scene about her sudden loss rather than the attack itself. Gina’s statement ends Cushla’s plans in a sentence and leaves her without the answers she expected to demand over time.

The death also changes the show’s central question. Cushla is no longer deciding whether love justifies secrecy. She must now learn who killed Michael, whether their affair exposed him, and what the people watching them already know. The sudden loss also leaves his vulnerable family facing the consequences of a public life they could never fully control. Which warning do you think Cushla will revisit first?
