Apple’s AirPods 5 buy page states it plainly: “AirPods 5 do not include a USB-C Charge Cable or power adapter.” Both boxes hold the earbuds, the charging case and documentation, and nothing else, so each model needs something you already own before it will take power.
That turns the $20 between the two models into a question about your drawer rather than your ears. The $129 case charges over USB-C only. The $149 Wireless Charging Case adds Qi-certified chargers and Apple Watch chargers, which means an Apple Watch owner can charge it on day one without finding a cable at all. What each model needs from your existing kit
Anyone with a recent iPhone, iPad or Mac already has a USB-C cable and something to plug it into, so the cheaper case is a non-issue in most households. The awkward case is a first-time buyer, or a gift, where the box on its own cannot charge anything.

The $149 model has three routes instead of one, and two of them are things people already own for other Apple products. It is the only AirPods 5 model that can be charged without a cable in the house.

The Apple Watch charger is the quiet detail
An Apple Watch puck powering a set of AirPods is not new, it was on AirPods 4 with ANC too, but it is the reason the $149 case suits an existing Apple Watch owner more than it suits anyone else. If you are buying a Apple Watch Series 12 on the same day, the charger in that box works on the AirPods case as well.
Apple does not say how fast any of these routes is. There is no wattage figure, no time to a full case charge, and no statement about how the wireless routes compare with the cable.
The case is the part that needs the cable
Both cases hold the same 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 mm shell and the same 4.3 gram earbuds, so the $149 version is 2.4 grams heavier without being any larger. The extra weight is the wireless charging coil and the speaker that lets Find My play a sound.
What the two share is the top-up figure. Five minutes in either case returns about an hour of listening, which is the number worth remembering, because the case is the reservoir for both models: 16 hours of reserve on the $129 version and 17 on the $149 one, worked out from Apple’s 20 and 22 hour totals. Once the case itself is flat, the only way back is the route Apple did not put in the box.
What Apple has removed over two generations
AirPods 4 shipped with the cable sold separately, so the direction of travel is not new, but the AirPods 5 wording is blunter: the cable and the adapter are both named and both excluded. Apple made the same move across the 2026 line, where the iPhone 18 Pro box contains a one-meter USB-C cable and no adapter.
The AirPods 5 box is one step further down, with neither. Nothing on Apple’s AirPods 5 pages recommends a specific adapter or names a minimum wattage, unlike the iPhone 18 Pro, where Apple cites a 60W adapter for its fast-charge claim.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a time to charge either case from empty, a wattage requirement, a Qi charging speed, or whether a MagSafe pad is treated as a Qi charger for the $149 case. It has not priced a replacement or standalone Wireless Charging Case, so the $20 is a decision made once at checkout. There is also no AirPods 5 support document or manual in Apple’s library yet, which is where the charging detail would normally sit.
Both models have been available to pre-order since September 9 and arrive in stores on Friday, September 18 in the US and more than 65 countries and regions. iOS 27 lands first, on Monday, September 14, and it is what the hands-free Siri AI features need, as our iOS 27 release coverage explains. If you are buying the $129 model as a gift, the cable is the thing to check before the 18th, because Apple is not putting one in the box.
