Apple Age Verification Is Failing For Some: Here Is What To Try

Apple recently rolled out its new age verification system in the UK with the iOS 26.4 update. The goal is to confirm that users are over 18 to keep younger audiences away from restricted content. However, the system is locking many adults out of basic features. If the prompt is stuck on your screen or refusing your documents, you are not alone. Here is a look at why it happens and how you can get past the roadblock.

Why does the system reject your details?

Apple has specific rules about what it accepts for this check. One major point of confusion is payment cards. The company accepts credit cards because those legally require users to be 18. It does not accept debit cards.

Passports are another headache. For reasons Apple has not fully explained, a UK passport will not work for this process. You can use a driver’s license, but the scanning tool is extremely picky about lighting and shadows.

Quick fixes for driving license scans

If you are trying to scan a driver’s license, the tool might seem like it is frozen. Place your card on a dark, matte surface. Make sure there is no glare or shadow on the plastic. Hold your phone steady and just wait. Many people report that the scan takes a full 10 seconds per side before it registers. Do not pull the phone away too early.

Finding the ID scan option can also be tricky. If you only see a prompt for a credit card, tap the option to enter details manually. Scroll all the way to the bottom of that page and select the option to try another way. That will bring up the camera for your license.

Fix your payment and account details

If you are using a payment method to verify your age, check your Apple account settings. The system will fail if your default payment method is PayPal, a prepaid card, or an Apple gift balance. You need a standard credit card linked directly to your account.

Make sure your billing details match exactly. If your Apple account shows one name or address but your credit card uses another, the verification will fail. Go into your payment settings and confirm everything is identical.

Other troubleshooting steps to try

Sometimes the software just gets stuck. A simple device restart has solved the problem for plenty of users. Turn your phone off, turn it back on, and try the prompt again.

You can also try signing out of your App Store session. Go to your settings, tap your name, select the media and purchases option, and sign out. Sign back in and retry the verification. This forces the system to refresh its connection and can clear out lingering errors.

If you have a brand new Apple account, the system might just need time. Some new accounts lack the history required for automatic checks. Waiting a day or two might resolve the issue on its own.

How can you prove ID if you don’t have a credit card or a passport or a driving licence

This is all part of a vastly bigger plan for digital ID, and we are going to be seeing a lot more of it in future. All part of controlling the ‘little people’, for our ‘own good’ of course.

Not just conspiracy theorists should be worried.
