Apple has shared new details about the future of its Pixelmator apps on iOS. The update comes alongside the launch of Pixelmator Pro for iPad and Apple’s new Creator Studio subscription. A new page on Apple’s website now clearly explains what happens next for Pixelmator and Photomator on iPhone.
Pixelmator for iOS reaches the end of updates
Apple confirms that Pixelmator for iOS will no longer receive updates. The app still works, but its development has stopped.

Apple explains this decision clearly on its website:
“Pixelmator Classic for iOS, released in 2014 as a companion app to the now-discontinued Pixelmator Classic for Mac, provides basic image editing features such as cropping, color adjustments, and effects. It remains a functional app but is no longer being updated.”
Pixelmator for iOS continued to receive updates even after Apple acquired the Pixelmator team. The most recent update arrived four months ago. Version 3.1.16 now stands as the final release.
Photomator stays alive with a twist
Photomator appears to be in a better position. Apple says the app remains available on the App Store as a separate purchase. While Apple does not share a roadmap, the wording suggests Photomator will continue to receive future updates.
This signals a clearer split in Apple’s image editing strategy. Pixelmator Pro moves forward on iPad and Mac, while Photomator remains Apple’s standalone photo editing option on iOS.
Both apps are still available to download, but only one has a future.
