Apple Launches Airtag 2 With Longer Range, Louder Speaker, and Better Privacy

Apple has launched a new AirTag that replaces the original model from 2021. Apple simply calls it the new AirTag, but it is the second generation of the popular tracker. You can order it today, and Apple will ship it later this week. The price stays the same, which keeps the AirTag easy to buy for people who already use the Find My app to track keys, bags, and other personal items.

Apple shared the full details of the new AirTag through its Newsroom announcement, which explains how this update focuses on better range, stronger sound, and tighter privacy controls without changing the familiar design.

Longer range and better finding tools

The new AirTag runs on Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which Apple also uses in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. This new chip lets Precision Finding guide you from much farther away. Apple says it now works from up to “50 percent farther” than before, which makes it easier to find items in large spaces like airports or parking areas.

Apple also upgraded Bluetooth, which extends how far your AirTag stays in touch with nearby devices. You now get Precision Finding on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, so you can track items right from your wrist instead of pulling out your phone.

These updates give users more ways to track items in real time through:

  • Visual arrows on the screen
  • Haptic feedback through taps and vibrations
  • Audio cues that guide you closer

Together, these tools make finding lost items faster and less frustrating.

Louder speaker and clearer alerts

Apple redesigned the internal speaker, and the change matters. The new AirTag is “50 percent louder” and you can hear it from up to “2x farther” than before. This helps when keys slide under a couch or when a bag hides in a noisy place. Apple also added a new chime that makes the sound easier to spot among other noises.

Find My network and item sharing

The AirTag 2 still relies on the Find My network, which uses nearby Apple devices to pass along location data in a private way. When your AirTag sits out of Bluetooth range, this network keeps tracking it until it comes back to you.

Apple also built the AirTag into Share Item Location. This feature lets you share the location of a lost item with trusted partners such as airlines. Apple says more than 50 airlines now support this system, and data from SITA shows it reduced baggage delays by 26 percent and cut truly lost luggage by 90 percent.

Privacy, materials, and price

Apple designed the new AirTag to track objects, not people or pets. It uses “industry-first protections” such as cross-platform alerts and Bluetooth identifiers that change often. Apple also keeps location data encrypted, so only the owner can see it.

The AirTag 2 uses recycled materials and comes in the same shape as before, so all older accessories still fit. Prices remain simple:

  • $29 for one AirTag
  • $99 for a four pack
  • $35 for the FineWoven Key Ring in five colors

The new AirTag works with iOS 26 or later and iPadOS 26 or later, and it supports Apple Watch models running watchOS 26.2.1.
