Apple CEO John Ternus and marketing chief Greg Joswiak have explained why the company waited to release iPhone Duo, how it approached the folding display, and why its first foldable starts at $1,999. Their answers describe a project built around hardware and software together, while presenting the high price as the cost of a more complex device.
In a joint video interview, Ternus said Apple launches a new product when it reaches the company’s standards for quality, durability, and design. Joswiak added that Apple did not want to release something half-finished simply to enter the foldable market earlier.
The executives also discussed tighter secrecy around the Duo and acknowledged that leaks had correctly identified its wider display shape. Apple has not revealed the unrelated internal code name used for the project.

Apple treated the display as a hardware and software problem
Ternus described the Duo as an opportunity to rethink several parts of the iPhone. The inner screen uses a polymer surface rather than a glass top layer, so Apple developed a different method for applying its nano-texture finish. Apple’s product announcement says the display stack also includes high-strength glass, flexible adhesives, and a titanium plate that help the layers move as the phone folds.

Secrecy protected the finished design, not the basic idea
Joswiak said Apple placed extra security around the project, discussed it with fewer people, and used a code name unrelated to the product. He also conceded that the broad idea of an Apple foldable had leaked and that outside reports had identified the aspect ratio. The company’s success, in his view, was keeping the complete device and its experience protected.

Ternus acknowledged that Duo costs more than other iPhones but said Apple considers it strong value for its complexity and engineering. That is Apple’s position rather than an objective conclusion.
