New data reveals that the smartphone market in China is noticeably slowing down. Recent numbers from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology show a significant drop in overall device shipments during February compared to last year.
This market shift impacts major international brands like Apple, which now has to go through softer consumer demand in one of its most important global regions.
The Chinese smartphone market is shrinking right now
The latest figures highlight a tough environment for phone makers. Total smartphone shipments in China hit 16.3 million units in February, which marks a 12.6 percent decrease from the exact same time last year. When combining January and February, the overall market fell by 14.3 percent to 36.9 million units.
Local Chinese brands took the massive majority of these sales, accounting for 85.5 percent of the total volume with 14.4 million units. That left foreign companies with roughly 1.9 million shipped units for the entire month. Since Apple is usually the only non-Chinese company to break into the top sellers list, the brand is directly tied to this smaller pool of shipments. The data clearly shows that fewer people are buying new phones right now.
Some market tracking firms believe iPhone sales are growing
Despite the gloomy market data, some tracking firms offer a slightly different perspective on how Apple is actually performing. Counterpoint Research recently noted that Apple managed an 8 percent bump in January shipments even as the wider market fell by 23 percent. Another report claimed the company saw a 23 percent jump in iPhone sales between January and early March, while the rest of the market dropped.
Regardless of the exact sales numbers, industry watchers agree that overall consumer demand is cooling off across the board. However, Apple might have a strong counter-strategy ready. The company released the new iPhone 17e in China in the middle of March.
Since this specific model will likely qualify for local government purchasing incentives, it could help the brand push through the sluggish market and boost its sales over the next few months.
