Apple is preparing to change its usual release schedule by launching new phones in the spring. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will introduce the iPhone Air 2 and the more affordable iPhone 18e early next year. Gurman expects these devices to arrive in March or April of 2027.
This move shows a clear shift toward a split launch strategy, spreading major phone releases between the fall and the spring.
What to expect from the new spring lineup
Apple usually saves its biggest phone reveals for September, but the spring 2027 window is shaping up to be busy. Gurman notes that the company is expected to release the standard iPhone 18 alongside the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2.
The standard iPhone 18 and the budget-friendly iPhone 18e will likely be simple updates. Rumors indicate both phones will get the new A20 chip, but it is unlikely that either will feature many other major changes.
The iPhone Air 2 sounds like a more noticeable upgrade. Reports point to it getting the same A20 processor, plus a second camera on the back and a larger battery. It is also expected to borrow a vapor chamber cooling system from the older iPhone 17 Pro to help manage heat. Apple is clearly pushing to improve the Air model, even though the first version reportedly saw lower sales numbers than the main lineup.
Here’s how the split iPhone launch schedule works
For years, people expected a single massive phone event right before the holiday shopping season. Now, Apple is dividing its attention. Under this new plan, detailed by Gurman, the premium models will stick to their usual fall slot. Buyers can expect the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new iPhone Ultra to arrive in September 2026.
By pushing the standard models and the Air series to the following spring, Apple gives each device more room to breathe. It also gives buyers more options throughout the year. We do not know yet if the company will host a live event for the spring releases, but its hardware plans are coming into focus.
