Australia will enforce its new social media law on December 10, 2025. The rule blocks anyone under 16 from using major platforms. Developers now need to follow strict steps to keep underage users out and adjust app behavior based on age.
Apple says developers must act quickly. The law demands that apps identify underage users, deactivate their accounts, and stop new signups. Authorities will allow a one-year transition period before penalties begin, but platforms still face strong pressure to comply from day one.

Children under 16 in Australia will lose access to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube (except YouTube Kids), Snapchat, X, Threads, Twitch, and Kick. The government may also expand this list depending on what apps younger users move to next.
Apple outlines tools for developers
Apple explains that developers can use several features to meet the requirements. The company highlights the new Declared Age Range API, which lets apps request a user’s age range and adjust features accordingly.
“Beginning December 10, 2025, a new Australian law will require certain social media platforms operating in Australia to prevent people under 16 from having a social media account.”
Apple also points to App Store description fields where developers can clearly state age rules. Apple recently updated the age ratings questionnaire to include questions about age assurance and parental controls. Apps that use the Declared Age Range API can show this capability on their product page.
Developers also have the option to set a higher minimum age rating. They can change this in App Store Connect to meet region-specific rules. Apple adds that developers can include an Age Suitability URL on the product page. This link can lead to a page explaining age policies for Australia.
Apple says Australia is the first country to introduce a full social media ban for children under 16. Developers now carry the responsibility to follow the rules and protect young users.
