According to recent industry reports, Apple recently canceled its plan to lay off around 5,000 customer support team members. The tech company originally hoped to replace these human workers with new automated phone and web agents driven by artificial intelligence. However, the business ultimately decided to hold off on this massive staff reduction. It is keeping its current human support network intact for the time being.

AI handles basic support calls while human jobs stay safe

Even though the layoffs are paused, the company is still moving forward with its new tech. People calling the main support number from the U.S. or Canada might notice a change. An automated voice assistant powered by generative AI now answers many of the incoming calls.

This system is smart enough to troubleshoot basic device problems and give callers step-by-step instructions. But the human element is not gone. If the automated system gets stuck, or if a caller simply asks to speak with a real person, it will immediately transfer the call to a human advisor.

By keeping its human staff, the company seems to realize that while automated agents can handle simple questions, real people are still needed for tricky problems. It is a win for the workers who get to keep their jobs and for customers who might still need a human voice to help them out.
