Apple Watch Audio Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro: Two Features Work, Two Do Not

Pair a new Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 with an iPhone 15 Pro and exactly half of Apple’s new Audio Intelligence set qualifies. Sound Recognition and Music Recognition ask for an iPhone 11 or later, while Live Rewind and Siri Recap require an iPhone 16 or newer, according to Apple support document 148354.

That second figure is stricter than the floor Apple sets for Apple Intelligence itself, which its iOS 27 page opens at iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro is therefore the one model that runs full Apple Intelligence and still misses two of the four features inside Apple’s newest Apple Intelligence category.

The four features and the two iPhone floors

Audio Intelligence is the name Apple gives a group of four capabilities, and document 148354 lists requirements per capability rather than for the group as a whole.

Apple does not explain the split. Nothing on the support document or on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 pages ties the iPhone 16 requirement to a specific chip, a memory figure or a model capability, and nothing says the requirement could change later.

Why iPhone 15 Pro owners are the awkward case

Apple’s own device list for Apple Intelligence begins with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, then covers every iPhone 16 and later model. An iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 27 gets Siri AI in beta, Image Playground, the redesigned Photos tools and the rest of the Apple Intelligence set.

Audio Intelligence sits inside that same Apple Intelligence umbrella and yet raises the bar for two of its four members. For a reader deciding whether to add a $399 Series 12 to an iPhone 15 Pro, the practical answer is that Sound Recognition and Shazam qualify and the two conversation features do not.

The same applies to every iPhone from the 11 through the 15 Plus. They clear the lower floor and not the higher one.

The watch side of the gate

No iPhone gets any of this without the new hardware. Document 148354 names Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 only, and both carry the S11 chip, which Apple describes as containing a Secure Exclave, a dedicated hardware-isolated compartment used for on-device audio processing. Apple says no audio recordings are stored.

watchOS 27 reaches Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later as a free update, so an older watch gains the Siri-suggested app grid, the tap gesture and the Cycle Tracking changes. Audio Intelligence is not in that free set.

The other conditions attached

  • English to start, with Apple saying only that additional languages are planned for future releases.
  • Sound Recognition and Music Recognition are listed as available, while Live Rewind and Siri Recap are dated as a beta later in 2026.
  • Daily usage limits apply to Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models.
  • Apple repeats in the same document that Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS.
  • Siri AI is not available to users under 13, per Apple’s footnotes.

What Apple has not said

  • Why Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an iPhone 16 when Apple Intelligence starts at iPhone 15 Pro.
  • Whether iPhone 15 Pro will ever qualify for those two features.
  • Which languages follow English, or when.
  • Whether the iPhone needs to be nearby, unlocked or on the same network for any of the four.
  • Any figure for how often Audio Intelligence can be used before a daily limit is reached.

Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores on Friday, September 18, and watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14. Sound Recognition and Shazam are the two an iPhone 15 Pro owner can plan on; our event recap covers what else Apple announced on September 9.
