Fun fact: Apple’s brand-new Apple Watch Series 12 appears to have thicker display bezels than the Apple Watch Series 9 released back in 2023, despite arriving three generations later.
Apple increased the case dimensions over those three generations, but the usable display has not grown at the same rate. The difference becomes clearer when you compare Apple’s official specifications.

The Series 12 gives you about 4.6% more display area than the larger Series 9, but its case is also 1mm taller and 2mm wider. That leaves more physical space around the OLED panel, making the black border look thicker.

Things get stranger when Series 10 and Series 11 enter the comparison. Those 46mm models offered a larger 1,220 mm² display inside a narrower 46 × 39mm case.
For Series 12, Apple:
- widened the 46mm case from 39mm to 40mm
- reduced display area from 1,220 mm² to 1,196 mm²
- kept the same 416 × 496 resolution
- kept the case thickness at 9.7mm
So Apple has effectively made the case wider while reducing the active display area compared with last year.

Series 12 still brings major upgrades, including the S11 chip, new Health Sensing System, Audio Intelligence and a returning ceramic option. Visually, though, bezel lovers are eating well in 2026.
