Two of the four new Apple Watch Series 12 Sport Loops are plaid, burgundy plaid and light umber plaid, and Apple says the pattern is made with a new inkjet printing process. That sentence is very close to the entire published description of the process.
It is the first time Apple has described how a Sport Loop pattern is put onto the fabric rather than simply naming the color, which makes it the most interesting band detail of the year and also the one with the least supporting information behind it.

What the inkjet line does and does not tell you
Apple attaches the new process to the plaid Sport Loops specifically. It does not say what the ink is, how many passes the pattern takes, how the print behaves after months of sweat and washing, or whether the same process is used on the two plain Sport Loop colors.

Nor does Apple claim the process makes the band more durable, more colorfast or more sustainable than the woven Sport Loops it has sold for years. It is described as new, and that is the whole of the claim.
Worth noting for anyone hoping the pattern spreads: plaid appears only on Series 12 Sport Loops in Apple’s September 9 materials. The Ultra 4 band range is unchanged in approach, with no printed pattern listed.
Two more material changes sit alongside it
The Modern Buckle moves to what Apple calls a new woven material and gains a gold hardware option, which is the second material change in the Series 12 range. The third belongs to Apple Watch Ultra 4, where the Ocean Band is made from a new silicone material in three translucent colors.

Not one band has a published price
Apple has priced none of the 2026 bands. Series 12 starts at From $399 and every watch includes one band in the box, but which band ships with which case finish is not published either, and neither is a figure for buying a second one.
Recycled content is published for the watches rather than the bands. Apple gives 40 percent recycled material overall for the aluminum and titanium Series 12 models and 45 percent for Ultra 4, with no per-band breakdown for any of the new fabrics or silicones.
The Hermès bands are the clearest case of the gap. Apple names the Noir satin Clou de Selle with its gold clasp and the Rocabar Club with its three-dimensional H pattern, describes the Grand H titanium band and its wetsuit extension for Ultra 4, and prints no figure against any of them.
What Apple has not said
- No detail on the inkjet process beyond the word new: no ink type, no passes, no colorfastness claim.
- No durability, fade or washing guidance for the plaid Sport Loops.
- No prices for any band, in any size, in any material.
- No recycled-content figure for individual bands.
- No statement on whether the printed plaid will appear on other band families later.
Series 12 and Ultra 4 pre-orders opened on September 9 and both reach stores on Friday, September 18, with the rest of what Apple announced on September 9.
