The hours Apple publishes, model by model
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 share the same S11 chip, the same always-on heart sensor measuring every five seconds all day, and the same claim of the most frequent HRV sampling Apple has shipped. What separates them in Apple’s own battery language is hours: 24 against 50 for normal use, 38 against 84 in Low Power Mode, 30 minutes against 45 to reach an 80 percent charge. Every one of those numbers describes an outcome. None of them describes what is actually inside the case. The pattern holds across the rest of this year’s launch too: Apple’s own preview material ahead of the keynote focused on the health sensors and the Readiness score, not on anything battery-related beyond the same hour figures Apple later confirmed.

Apple states a case weight to a tenth of a gram across four finishes and two sizes. It has not applied that same precision to the battery sitting inside any of those cases.
Why the gap is easy to miss this year specifically
Series 12 and Ultra 4 arrive with a heart sensor that Apple says reads 60 times more often in the background and an HRV figure sampled 24 times more frequently than before, both running continuously against the same stated hours. Apple does not say whether that increased sampling changes how it arrived at the 24-hour or 50-hour figures, and it has not published the underlying capacity that would let anyone reason about the relationship between constant sensing and total runtime independently of Apple’s own hour-based claim.
What would settle it
The equipment authorization filing Apple submits to the FCC before a new cellular or Bluetooth device can be sold in the US typically records the battery’s rated specifications. Once such filings for the cellular Series 12 models (A3582, A3587) and the Ultra 4 model (A3579) are entered in the public FCC database, that would be the document that settles this figure. It is not something Apple’s own marketing or specifications pages, as published today, include.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a milliamp-hour figure for the Series 12 battery or the Ultra 4 battery, in any case size or material. It has not published a charge-cycle count for either watch, and it has not stated whether the new heart-rate and HRV sampling frequency was factored into the hour figures as a best case, a typical case, or something else. Nothing here estimates a capacity number; Apple has not said, and none is guessed here.
Both watches reach stores Friday, September 18, 2026, the same date as AirPods 5. A milliamp-hour figure, if one surfaces, is far more likely to come from a regulatory filing made public around that date than from any update to Apple’s own store or specifications pages.
