Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 both receive watchOS 27 for free on Monday, September 14, 2026, gaining the same software features as every other compatible Apple Watch. Everything Apple built around the new S11 chip, from the Health Sensing System to the Ultra 4’s 45-hour Max Extended Workout mode, stays exclusive to Ultra 4.

For an Ultra owner deciding whether to sit this generation out, that line between free software and paid hardware is the one worth reading carefully, because Apple draws it the same way for the Ultra line as it does for the standard Series line.

What watchOS 27 gives Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 for free

  • The Siri-suggested app grid and the single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack.
  • The new Siri Modular watch face.
  • Perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking, for users 40 and over. Apple’s own wording states the feature should not be used for birth control or to diagnose a health condition.
  • Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhone, over Wi-Fi or cellular, plus a new Spanish option, which matters directly to a watch built for long solo workouts.
  • The consolidated Find My app, which Apple ties to Ultra 2 and later, covering both models here.

What only Ultra 4 gets

Max Extended Workout mode, up to 45 hours with one-second GPS intervals for 100-mile racesUltra 4 hardware specifically

Why these features stay chip-bound, not update-bound

Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Shazam detection all run through the S11’s Secure Exclave, which Apple describes as a hardware-isolated compartment used for on-device audio processing, with immediate deletion. That is silicon, not a setting, so no watchOS update can switch it on for a chip that does not physically include it. The same logic applies to the Health Sensing System and the Readiness score, both built on the S11’s new heart sensors rather than on anything watchOS 27 installs by itself.

Apple calls Ultra 4’s GPS the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch, and pairs that claim with the new Max Extended Workout mode, which holds one-second GPS intervals for up to 45 hours and is aimed squarely at races over 100 miles. Apple has not published a matching accuracy figure for Ultra 2 or Ultra 3’s GPS, and neither model gains a Max Extended Workout mode through watchOS 27, because Apple ties the feature to Ultra 4’s hardware rather than to the software update both older Ultras are about to install.

The satellite question Apple leaves open for Ultra 2

Apple’s Ultra 4 announcement says satellite communications continue with two years included, and states that the two-year window applies to ā€œUltra 3 and later.ā€ Ultra 2 is not named in that sentence. Apple has not published a separate statement covering what an Ultra 2’s satellite terms look like now, so that is a gap in what Apple has said, not a claim either way.

Both Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 also need the paired iPhone already on iOS 27, running an iPhone 11 or later or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), per Apple’s watchOS page checked today. That is unchanged whether the watch is an Ultra 2, an Ultra 3, or a brand new Ultra 4.

What Apple has not said

  • Whether Apple offers any published upgrade path from Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 toward Ultra 4.
  • A direct GPS accuracy figure for Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 to compare against Ultra 4’s ā€œmost accurate on-device GPS in a sports watchā€ claim.
  • Confirmation, one way or the other, of Ultra 2’s satellite terms after this year’s change.

watchOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14, 2026. Ultra 4 and Series 12 reach stores September 18. The full event recap and iOS 27 release details cover the rest of what changes that week.
