Apple’s Next iPhone Air May Add Two Rear Cameras

Apple is reportedly working on a second-generation iPhone Air that could feature two rear cameras instead of one. The change would make it the first ultra-thin iPhone to include a dual-lens setup, bringing it closer in design to the regular iPhone 17 models.

According to a Chinese leaker known as Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing a design that adds a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens next to the existing 48MP Fusion Main camera. The setup would mirror the base iPhone 17’s camera system, but Apple plans to keep the iPhone Air’s unique horizontal camera plateau rather than adopting the vertical layout seen on other models.

The iPhone Air’s internal design already houses multiple technologies within that plateau to save space for the battery. Adding another lens would require a major internal redesign, which could be challenging for a device that’s focused on being thin and light. Apple reportedly wants to keep those priorities even while expanding its camera system.

Release Timeline and Future Plans

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to launch the second-generation iPhone Air alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the company’s first foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026. A larger third-generation iPhone Air is also planned for 2027.

However, the first iPhone Air hasn’t performed well outside China, raising questions about whether Apple will continue with this lineup. Still, the company seems interested in refining the concept instead of dropping it entirely.

Digital Chat Station has a solid record for Apple leaks. The same account correctly reported the smaller 48MP sensor on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, as well as the display design of the iPhone 12 before its release.

If accurate, this leak suggests Apple wants to make the iPhone Air more capable without losing its slim identity, balancing design and performance in a model meant to feel different from the Pro and standard iPhone lines.
