Google Maps has officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America for people using the app inside the United States. This sudden update arrives just days after a new executive order from the White House mandated the change. The tech company explained that the name shift aligns with its standard practice of matching local government geographic databases for bodies of water.
The map update follows a new presidential executive order
President Donald Trump signed the executive order to rename the lake last Thursday. This move happened during an ongoing trade dispute between the United States and Canada, which recently resulted in massive tariffs from both sides. Because the United States government formally updated its geographic database, the popular navigation app followed suit for its American audience.
The app handles the naming differently based on where you live. People searching from inside Canada will still see the traditional Lake Ontario name on their screens. Anyone checking the map from outside North America will see both names listed together. Google previously made a similar move in 2025 when it changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users in the United States.

Canadian and local leaders push back against the name change
The decision to rename the historic body of water quickly drew criticism from politicians across the border. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the idea that a presidential order could simply erase an Indigenous name that existed long before either country was formed. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also stepped in, putting up a massive billboard on the Canadian shore that proudly reads that it will be Lake Ontario now and forever.
Even politicians within the United States voiced their concerns over the sudden switch. New York Governor Kathy Hochul firmly stated that her state would not adopt the new Lake America title. While the political fight continues, the map update is already live for millions of users, cementing the new name on American digital screens for the foreseeable future.
