If you opened Settings > General > Software Update and saw iOS 26.2 size sitting at 10GB or more, you are not alone. Some devices show a download that looks more like a full reinstall than a routine update, which is why it feels shocking.
Still, a big number on that screen does not always mean Apple suddenly made iOS heavier overnight. In many cases, the update method and your current iOS version decide the final size.

Why the download can look so huge
First, update packages are not always the same. Sometimes your iPhone gets a smaller delta download, which patches only the parts that changed. Other times, it pulls a larger package that replaces more of the system, so the download size jumps.
Next, iOS also needs working space during installation. Your iPhone downloads the update, then unpacks it and stages files before it finishes. Because of this, storage usage can spike even if the final system size does not grow by the same amount.
What you can do right now
Start with the simplest fix. Check how much free storage your iPhone has, then try again on a stable Wi-Fi connection. If the download looks stuck or unusually large, delete the downloaded update from iPhone Storage and download it again.
If storage is tight, updating through a computer often helps. When you update using Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows, the update downloads to the computer first. This usually reduces the temporary space your iPhone needs during installation.
Security notes you should not ignore
Even when new features feel minor, updates usually include security fixes. Apple publishes details about security content after release, which makes installing the update important once you are ready.
Apple limits you to 5 g of cloud space but this update requires almost 17g of space!
