Apple has introduced a new HomePod setting called Lock Controls in iOS 27.2 beta 4, allowing users to disable touch interactions on their smart speakers. The update arrived on October 13 with build number 24B5110a, shortly after Apple’s Welcome Home event, where the company announced the new HomePod mini 2.
The setting gives users greater control over how their HomePod responds to physical touches, especially when accidental taps interrupt music playback or change the volume unexpectedly.
What Does HomePod Lock Controls Do?
The new Lock Controls option disables touch interactions on the HomePod’s top surface when enabled. According to the description discovered in beta 4, the setting prevents taps, touch-and-hold gestures, and volume adjustments through the speaker’s touch controls.

Here’s what changes when you enable it:
| HomePod Control | Lock Controls Enabled |

| Double-tap to skip tracks | Disabled |
| Touch and hold to activate Siri | Disabled |
| Volume adjustments using touch | Disabled |
| Siri voice commands | Expected to remain available |
Apple’s official HomePod user guide explains how these touch gestures normally work.
Why Is Apple Adding This Feature?
The new setting appears particularly useful for preventing accidental touches, including an issue commonly described as ghost touch, where a HomePod registers interactions without intentional input.
It also gives users a way to prevent unwanted playback interruptions when cleaning the speaker or keeping it somewhere children can easily reach.
Previously, Apple offered Touch Accommodations, which lets users adjust how HomePod responds to gestures. The new Lock Controls option goes further by disabling those interactions altogether.

When Will HomePod Lock Controls Be Available?
Lock Controls has appeared in iOS 27.2 beta 4, although Apple has not confirmed which HomePod models will support the feature or whether it will be enabled in the public release.
The discovery follows Apple’s HomePod mini 2 announcement. The new $149 speaker launches on October 30 with HomePod software 27.2, an S10 chip, and Sound Glow lighting effects.
Apple has also confirmed these details in its official HomePod mini 2 announcement.
