iOS 27 Adds a Small Clock Mode to the iPhone Lock Screen

iOS 27 adds a new Lock Screen clock setting that shrinks the time display and gives wallpapers more visible space.

Apple is introducing another Lock Screen customization feature in iOS 27, and this time the update focuses on giving users more room to show off their wallpaper. The latest software update adds a new option that lets you minimize the Lock Screen clock, making it much smaller and moving it out of the way so your wallpaper remains the center of attention.

A New Way to Customize Your Lock Screen

Apple expanded Lock Screen personalization with recent iOS releases, and iOS 27 continues that trend with a simple but useful addition. While iOS 26 allowed users to make the Lock Screen clock larger through the Liquid Glass design, iOS 27 now offers the opposite option for those who prefer a cleaner look.

When customizing the Lock Screen, users will find a new icon in the top-right corner of the Font & Color panel. Selecting this option shrinks the clock and places it in the top widget row rather than displaying it prominently in the middle of the screen.

The biggest benefit of this feature is that it frees up a significant portion of the Lock Screen. Large clocks often cover important parts of wallpaper images, especially photos with detailed backgrounds or subjects positioned near the center of the screen.

By moving the clock to the top widget area and reducing its size, iOS 27 allows wallpapers to remain much more visible without losing access to the time.

Apple previously used a similar layout when displaying full-screen album artwork on the Lock Screen. In those situations, the clock automatically moved out of the way to give more space to the artwork. With iOS 27, users can enable this minimized clock style all the time rather than only when listening to music.

For iPhone owners who rarely check the time on their phone because they wear an Apple Watch, this new customization option offers a cleaner and less distracting Lock Screen while keeping their favorite wallpaper fully visible.
