Apple has published two different chip floors for the iPad Air. The compatibility footnote on Apple’s iPadOS page reads “iPad Air (4th generation and later, M2 and later)”, while Apple’s Apple Intelligence page lists “iPad Air (M1 and later)”.
Both pages were live on Saturday, two days before iPadOS 27 ships as a free update on Monday, September 14. We are reporting the conflict rather than resolving it, because Apple has published nothing that says which qualifier governs.

Apple’s footnote names four families and attaches a parenthetical to each one: “iPad Pro (4th generation and later, M1 and later), iPad Air (4th generation and later, M2 and later), iPad (9th generation and later, A16), iPad mini (6th generation, A17 Pro)”.

What the Apple Intelligence page says about the same iPads
The Apple Intelligence device list is shorter and uses chips alone: “iPad Pro (M1 and later), iPad Air (M1 and later), iPad mini (A17 Pro)”. Apple’s own shorthand on the OS pages compresses it further, to “iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad (M1+)”.
Two of the three families line up. The iPad Pro reads M1 and later on both pages, and the iPad mini reads A17 Pro on both. The iPad Air is the single line where the two numbers differ.

The reading that would explain the parentheses, and where it breaks
One reading is that the chips in the iPadOS footnote mark the Apple Intelligence subset inside each family rather than the floor for installing the update. On that reading the two pages should still print the same figure for the iPad Air, and they do not.
A second problem sits one line below. The footnote gives the standard iPad an “A16” qualifier, and no standard iPad appears on the Apple Intelligence list at all, which names only iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini. So the subset reading does not survive the iPad line either.
Apple uses chip names as gates across this launch, so the ambiguity is not a stylistic quirk. It is the same approach that makes the A20 Pro the dividing line on the iPhone side, where the lists name models instead of silicon.
What an iPad Air owner can act on before Monday
The conflict points in one direction only. If the M2 qualifier is a compatibility floor, an iPad Air with an M1 is not on the iPadOS 27 list; if it marks the Apple Intelligence subset, that iPad Air takes the update and the Apple Intelligence page’s M1 floor is the one that counts for the features.
Apple has published no third option and no correction, which leaves one practical answer: the Software Update screen on Monday. iOS 27 carries the same date, and Apple has published a date for every 27 release without publishing a time for any of them.
- Apple publishes no download size and no free-space figure for iPadOS 27.
- Apple has published no statement that any 27 update rolls out in stages or by region.
- Apple’s security releases index still tops out at iPadOS 26.6.2, dated September 8, with no 27 rows.
- iPadOS 26.7 shipped on event day, September 9, on the old branch, with no explanation from Apple.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not said which of its two pages governs the iPad Air, has not explained why the iPadOS footnote pairs generations with chips when no other device list in the family does, and has not published a per-model memory figure for any iPad.
It has also published no support document for iPadOS 27, no release time, and no note acknowledging that the two figures differ. Our event live blog has the sequence in which each of these pages went up.
iPadOS 27 is dated Monday, September 14, free, alongside iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. If the iPad Air line changes, Monday is when it will show.
