The iPhone 18 Pro display is 2622 x 1206 at 460 pixels per inch, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 2868 x 1320 at the same 460 ppi. Neither set of numbers is new. Both carry over from the iPhone 17 Pro generation, and the 6.3-inch figures go back to the iPhone 16 Pro.
Apple publishes resolutions and densities for iPhone, not pixel counts or screen areas. Multiply the two Pro resolutions out and the Pro Max holds about 20 percent more pixels than the Pro, which is arithmetic rather than an Apple claim.

What did change over those three years is behaviour rather than geometry. The iPhone 16 Pro is listed at 2000 nits peak outdoor brightness, while the 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro are listed at 3000 nits, with 1600 nits peak for HDR content and 1000 nits typical on both current generations.

About 20 percent more pixels on the Pro Max
The 6.3-inch panel works out to 3,162,132 pixels and the 6.9-inch panel to 3,785,760, a difference of 623,628 pixels or a little under 20 percent. Apple does not print either total, and it does not print the comparison between the two sizes anywhere on the specifications page.
Because both panels run at 460 ppi, those extra pixels buy area rather than sharpness. A photo shown at the same size looks equally fine on both, and the bigger screen simply shows more of it, which is the practical version of the choice between the two Pro sizes.
460 ppi is the number Apple holds constant, with one exception
Five of the six panels above are 460 ppi, including the iPhone Air at an unusual 2736 x 1260 and the iPhone Duo cover display at 1398 x 2034. Only the Duo’s 7.6-inch folding panel differs, at 430 ppi.
That exception explains a number Apple does publish. Apple describes the inner display as 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen, yet its 1878 x 2670 resolution is about 32 percent more pixels than the Pro Max. Area grows faster than pixel count when density drops, which is the whole difference between 430 and 460 ppi in one Duo against Pro Max line.
Apple publishes display area for its watches and not for its phones
The spec sheet for the Apple Watch Series 12 gives active display areas of 970 square millimetres at 42mm and 1196 at 46mm, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 gets 1245 square millimetres. No iPhone specification carries an equivalent figure.
That is why screen-size comparisons between iPhones always come back to the diagonal, the resolution and the density. They are the only three numbers Apple gives you to work with.
What Apple has not said
Apple publishes no pixel totals, no viewable area in square millimetres, no subpixel arrangement, no panel supplier and no explanation for holding the 6.3-inch resolution steady for a third generation. It also publishes no minimum brightness figure for any iPhone display.
Pre-orders for both iPhone 18 Pro sizes open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific, with availability on Friday, September 18. The iPhone Duo and its 430 ppi inner display arrive on October 23.
