A video shooter choosing between the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is not choosing between cameras. Apple lists the same three 48MP rear cameras, the same 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps, the same ProRes at 4K120 with external recording, the same Apple Log 2 and Genlock, and the same USB 3 port at 10 Gb/s on both sizes.
What separates them for filming is a longer battery rating, a bigger monitor and 38 g of extra weight in the rig. That is three lines, and only one of them is a number Apple measured with a camera running.

The storage line is newer than it looks. Last year the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro stopped at 1TB while only the Pro Max offered 2TB, so a shooter who wanted the top capacity had to take the bigger phone. This year both sizes go to 2TB, at $2,399 and $2,499.

Nine hours of extra playback rating is the biggest difference, and the monitoring area is the one most likely to be noticed on set, since the bigger panel carries just under 20 percent more pixels at the same 460 ppi.
Apple rates playback, and never rates recording
Every battery figure Apple publishes for these phones describes consumption: video playback, streamed video and its new typical-use metric. None of them describes capture, which is the load a shooter cares about, and Apple publishes no capacity in milliamp hours that would let anyone estimate it.
The charging claims are identical on both sizes, up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter that Apple has not priced, and up to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W adapter and MagSafe. Only the Pro Max gets a claim stated in hours: five minutes on a cable for about seven hours of video playback. Our explainer on the battery and charging claims sets out what each one measures.
Weight is the line to decide on
At 211 g and 249 g the two phones are 38 g apart, in bodies of the same 8.75 mm thickness. For handheld work, a gimbal payload or a cage, that is the difference that persists through the day, and it is the one thing the spec sheet states plainly and the marketing never mentions. Everything behind the glass is common to both. The four aperture stops on the main camera, the manual aperture and shutter speed controls, Smart Focus, the upgraded Photographic Styles and the Audio Mix with music isolation are listed for the generation rather than for a size, as our camera explainer and launch-day rundown cover.
What Apple has not said
- How long either model can record, in any format, on a full charge.
- Any thermal or sustained-performance figure for either size, including during 4K120 or ProRes capture.
- How much storage a minute of 4K120 Dolby Vision or ProRes consumes at any capacity.
- Which external drives or cables are required for ProRes 4K120 recording over USB-C.
- Any per-size difference in microphones, stabilization or the Audio Mix features, which are listed once for both models.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, which is 12:00 UTC, and both sizes reach stores on Friday, September 18, with iOS 27 arriving on Monday, September 14. For a shooter the choice is a 38 g body against nine rated hours and a larger monitor, because nothing in the capture specification moves either way.
