The number people keep repeating for iPhone 18 Pro’s vapor chamber, a claim of roughly 40 percent better sustained performance, is not what Apple actually says about the vapor chamber. Apple’s own material states the next-generation vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous design, a cooling claim, while the 40 percent figure belongs to a separate statement about the A20 Pro’s GPU speed against the A19 Pro.

The two numbers get merged because they appear close together in the same chip announcement, and because Apple’s A20 Pro reveal covers cooling and speed in the same breath. Separating them matters, because one describes hardware built to move heat and the other describes a graphics benchmark that has nothing to do with temperature.

What Apple’s vapor chamber claim actually says

Apple describes the A20 Pro as sitting against a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the design it replaces, built to pull heat away from the chip faster during sustained work. Surface area is a physical property of the cooling hardware. It is not, on its own, a percentage of extra performance, and Apple does not convert it into one anywhere in its iPhone 18 Pro announcement.

Where the 40 percent figure actually comes from

Apple’s chip specifications state the A20 Pro’s 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro’s GPU. That figure sits next to the dual 16-core Neural Engine claim and the 50 percent memory bandwidth claim in the same performance section, and none of the three is presented as a thermal or sustained-performance number. Reading the GPU speed claim as the vapor chamber’s payoff is the most likely source of the community figure, since the two ideas, a faster chip and a bigger cooler, arrived in the same paragraph of the same release.

Why iPhone Duo’s number looks similar but is not the same phone

Apple does publish a sustained-performance percentage this year, just not for iPhone 18 Pro. iPhone Duo, which shares the A20 Pro chip, carries Apple’s own claim of up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, tied to a custom vapor chamber built for the foldable’s thinner, hinged body. That is close enough to the circulating 40 percent figure to explain some of the confusion, but it is a different number attached to a different product, and Apple has not extended it to iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max.

What that means for gaming and video

Apple has not published a throttling figure for iPhone 18 Pro under any specific task, gaming, 4K ProRes recording or otherwise. The vapor chamber’s three-times surface-area claim is presented as an engineering description of the cooling hardware, not as a guarantee about how long peak performance lasts in any app. Nobody has independently tested an iPhone 18 Pro yet, since the hardware only reaches buyers on September 18, so no sustained-performance measurement exists to cite in either direction.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a sustained-performance percentage for iPhone 18 Pro’s vapor chamber, has not stated how the three-times surface-area figure translates into a real-world benchmark, and has not said whether the difference between iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo’s cooling designs produces a measurable gap in practice. A third-party sustained-performance benchmark, run once review units exist, is the document that would settle the question; none exists yet.
