Apple plans to split its iPhone launch cycle starting in 2026, and that change puts its most expensive models first. The company wants to release a foldable iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the second half of 2026, then push the standard iPhone 18 to the first half of 2027. The goal is to protect supply, control costs, and give Apple more room to focus on its high-margin devices.
Nikkei Asia reported that Apple will prioritize three premium models for its main 2026 launch while delaying the regular iPhone 18. The outlet said four people with direct knowledge of the plan confirmed the move, which also includes Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
Why Apple is changing the launch cycle
Apple wants to avoid production problems while it prepares its most complex iPhone so far. The foldable model needs new materials and more advanced manufacturing, so Apple plans to give it priority over cheaper models.
One iPhone supplier executive explained the situation in plain terms, saying, “Supply chain smoothness is one of the key challenges for this year, and the marketing strategy change also played a part in the decision [to prioritize premium models].”
At the same time, memory chips and other key parts now cost more. Many suppliers also serve fast-growing AI companies like Nvidia, Google, and Amazon, which adds pressure on Apple’s supply chain. Apple even warned during its recent earnings call that iPhone supply constraints are affecting the current quarter.
What ships and when
Here is how Apple’s iPhone 18 lineup now looks based on the report:
- Second half of 2026
- Foldable iPhone
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Air 2 (minor upgrade)
- First half of 2027
- Standard iPhone 18
- Updated iPhone 18e
Apple also has a second-generation iPhone Air in development, but it’s unclear if it would ship this year.
For now, Apple has not confirmed any of this. Still, the supply chain and cost pressure make this split launch plan look more likely as 2026 gets closer.
