iPhone Duo’s Inner Camera Is the Only One Without a Published Resolution

Apple names a megapixel figure for every other camera on iPhone Duo: 48MP for the Main, 48MP for the Ultra Wide, 12MP for the Center Stage camera on the outer display. The camera built into the inner display, the one that carries FaceTime when the phone is open, is the exception. Apple publishes an aperture, f/1.8, and a video ceiling, 1080p at 30 to 60 fps, and nothing else.

iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16, and the phone ships Friday, October 23. Nobody has used the inner camera yet, so this is a reading of Apple’s own published specifications, not a hands-on judgment.

What Apple confirms about the inner camera

Apple’s iPhone Duo product page describes an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner display, with Center Stage support for calls, an f/1.8 aperture, and video capped at 1080p between 30 and 60 fps. Unlike the outer Center Stage camera, it sits beneath the 7.6-inch folding display itself rather than inside a Dynamic Island cutout, which is the detail that makes it a genuinely different piece of hardware, not a smaller version of the same part.

The screen it has to see through

Apple’s press release describes the inner display’s cover as a custom polymer with 40 percent higher stiffness than the industry standard, layered over high-strength glass and finished with a scratch-resistant, nano-texture coating. The camera sensor sits beneath some portion of that stack, an arrangement Apple has confirmed exists without describing which layers sit directly above the lens or how much light each one removes before it reaches the sensor. Apple’s own language for the nano-texture finish says it reduces glare and minimizes the visible crease; it says nothing about what that same textured surface does to a lens looking outward through it from underneath.

This is a different engineering problem than the outer Center Stage camera faces, since that one sits in ordinary glass with a standard coating, not a display panel built to also show pixels. Apple has treated the two front cameras as different enough to specify separately on its own tech specs page, which is itself a signal that the inner camera is not simply a lower-tier version of the outer one, built the same way with a smaller number attached.

The number Apple left out

Apple’s outer front camera gets a named resolution, 12MP, in the same sentence as its aperture. Its inner front camera gets an aperture and a frame-rate ceiling and stops there. Apple has not published a megapixel figure, a sensor size, or a low-light rating for the inner camera, even in the tech specs page that lists resolution for every other lens on the phone, front or rear. Apple has also not said whether Duo FaceTime, the feature that lets a nearby friend join a call from the outer display, ever calls on the inner camera at all, or relies entirely on the outer one once a second person is involved.

Why the published specs point toward a resolution cap

f/1.8 is a wider aperture than the outer camera’s f/2.2, letting in more light per pixel, which would matter if a display stack sits between the lens and its subject; Apple has not stated that as the reason. The 1080p ceiling sits well below the outer camera’s 4K Dolby Vision, the widest gap between any two comparable cameras Apple has published for this phone. Apple has not said whether that ceiling comes from the sensor itself, from processing overhead, or from a deliberate choice to prioritize the camera being invisible over it capturing more detail. What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a resolution, a sensor size, or a low-light figure for iPhone Duo’s inner camera, and it has not explained why that camera is the one exception on its own spec sheet. Every other figure in this piece, aperture and frame rate included, comes directly from Apple’s product page and press release for iPhone Duo, alongside the same figures for the rest of its camera system and for the iPhone 18 Pro Max for comparison.

Apple’s tech specs page is the place a missing figure would appear first, and nothing has changed there since the September 9 announcement. iPhone Duo ships Friday, October 23, after pre-orders open Friday, October 16.
