MacBook Neo 256GB Model Skips Touch ID Unless You Pay $100 Extra

touch ID MacBook Neo

Apple just introduced the MacBook Neo as its most affordable MacBook yet, starting at $599, but the base 256GB model ships without Touch ID on the keyboard, which immediately raises a usability concern because many macOS features and services rely on fingerprint authentication for quick access and secure approvals.

The laptop still delivers several appealing specs for the price, including a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, Apple’s A18 Pro chip, a silent fanless design, and up to 16 hours of battery life, however buyers who choose the entry configuration will notice that the keyboard includes no fingerprint sensor at all.

According to Apple’s official newsroom announcement, the MacBook Neo lineup separates Touch ID from the base storage tier, meaning the fingerprint reader only appears on the higher configuration.

“The MacBook Neo model with Touch ID enables easy, quick, and secure login authentication, and the ability to conveniently authorize purchases using Apple Pay.”

256GB MacBook Neo skips Touch ID

Apple sells the MacBook Neo in just two configurations, and only one of them includes the Touch ID button.

  • $599: 256GB storage, standard Magic Keyboard without Touch ID
  • $699: 512GB storage with Touch ID integrated into the keyboard

Because Apple links Touch ID to the higher storage option, buyers cannot add the feature to the cheaper 256GB model even as a separate upgrade.

That decision matters because Touch ID simplifies many daily tasks on macOS, including:

  • Signing in to the Mac
  • Unlocking password managers and apps
  • Approving Apple Pay purchases
  • Confirming system settings and downloads

Without it, users must type their password repeatedly throughout the day.

A small price jump unlocks a key feature

For many buyers, the difference between the two models will come down to the extra $100 upgrade, since the higher tier includes both 512GB storage and Touch ID, which removes a common friction point during everyday use.

Apple offers a $100 education discount, which lowers the entry model to $499 and the upgraded version with Touch ID to $599.

MacBook Neo comes in Silver, Citrus, Blush, and Indigo, and Apple has already opened preorders, with availability starting March 11.
