macOS 27 Golden Gate becomes available as a free update on Monday, September 14, 2026, and for the first time an entire class of Mac cannot install it. Apple’s developer note, published the same day as the release candidate, states that macOS 26 was the final release to support Intel Mac computers and Rosetta, and that macOS 27 is Apple silicon only.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is the last release to support Rosetta, by Apple’s own developer note.

That is a larger compatibility change than anything on the iPhone side of the September update wave, where no device lost support with iOS 27. It also lands the same week Apple opened App Store submissions for the whole 27 family, so developers absorbed the Intel cutoff and a new build requirement at the same time.

What Apple silicon only means for developers

Apple’s developer note tells teams still submitting universal or Intel builds to set the build architecture to arm64 only, then rebuild and resubmit for macOS 27. Apple has set an April 2027 SDK build deadline for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS apps; its developer note does not list a matching SDK deadline for macOS.

Apple has not published a list of which specific Intel Mac models stop receiving new macOS versions as a result. Its compatibility line states only what qualifies for macOS 27, built entirely around Apple silicon, and leaves the exclusion to be read from what is missing.

The design changes riding along with the cutoff

  • A more uniform toolbar across the top of apps, edge-to-edge sidebars and colored sidebar icons, which Apple describes as macOS reincorporating “cornerstone macOS elements.”
  • Updated window shapes and menu bar icons, plus the same Liquid Glass tint slider Apple ships on iOS 27, running from ultra-clear to fully tinted.
  • Higher resolutions on ultrawide displays, “such as 5K at 120Hz.”
  • Video podcasts on Mac, with the ability to “switch seamlessly between watching and listening,” plus Picture-in-Picture, transcripts and chapters.

Siri AI on Mac, and the EU exception that sets it apart

Apple’s Siri AI footnote names three operating systems it excludes from the EU at launch: “Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.” macOS is not one of them. Apple’s own line for the Mac reads: “Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language.”

The two Apple Intelligence tiers on Mac

TierRequirementWhat it unlocks
Base Apple IntelligenceMac with M1 chip or laterSiri AI beta, Image Playground, Genmoji, Writing Tools, Clean Up in Photos
Advanced on-device tierMac with M3 or later and 12GB or more unified memorySiri voice customization (pitch, speed, tone, accent) and an improved on-device Dictation model

Apple applies the same 12GB memory floor to the equivalent iPad tier, which needs an M4 chip rather than M3. A Mac that clears only the base bar still gets the Siri AI beta and the rest of Apple Intelligence; it simply keeps Siri’s original voice and the older Dictation model.

What Apple has not said

  • Apple has not published which Intel Mac models are cut off by name, only what qualifies for macOS 27.
  • Apple has not given a time of day for the September 14 rollout, only the date.
  • Apple has not confirmed a month for Siri AI languages beyond English on Mac.
  • Apple has not said whether Rosetta will be available in any form for macOS 27 through a separate download.
