macOS 27 Adds 5K at 120Hz on Ultrawide Displays: What It Actually Needs

Apple Unveils New Mac Studio With M5 Max and M5 Ultra, Up to 512GB RAM

Buried in Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate feature list is one line easy to miss: “higher resolutions on ultrawide displays, such as 5K at 120Hz.” Apple does not name a display on that page, but its own product pages for Mac Studio and Studio Display XDR point at exactly which hardware combination reaches that number.

The display side of the equation

Studio Display XDR, which Apple introduced in March 2026, is a 27-inch 5120-by-2880 mini-LED panel with 2,304 local dimming zones, up to 1000 nits full-screen SDR brightness, 2000 nits peak HDR, and a refresh range Apple lists as Adaptive Sync 47Hz to 120Hz. The standard Studio Display, sold alongside it at $1,599, is the more common 5K panel but is not the model Apple ties to the new 120Hz ultrawide support.

The Mac side of the equation

Apple’s own Mac Studio press release states that a Mac Studio with M5 Max “drives up to 8 displays, or 4 Studio Display XDR at 5K/120Hz.” That is a specific, quotable claim: one Mac Studio, four Studio Display XDR units, all at full resolution and full refresh rate at once, a configuration that needs both the display’s 120Hz panel and a chip built to feed four of them simultaneously.

The chip behind the number

Apple’s own M5 Max specifications explain why a single Mac Studio can push four 5K, 120Hz panels at once rather than one or two. Apple lists M5 Max at up to a 40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in every core, up to 128GB of unified memory, and memory bandwidth up to 614GB/s, more than four times what the entry M6 chip in the smaller Mac mini carries. Driving four independent 5K signals at 120Hz, rather than one shared signal split across displays, is a bandwidth problem before it is anything else, and Apple’s own figures are the explanation for why the company names a specific chip rather than simply saying “Mac Studio.”

What this is not

Apple Intelligence and macOS 27’s own compatibility list both reach back to M1 Macs from 2020, and nothing about the ultrawide 5K at 120Hz line changes that baseline for the operating system as a whole. What is chip-specific is the multi-display ceiling Apple actually quotes: four Studio Display XDR units at full resolution and full refresh rate is a Mac Studio M5 Max claim, not a claim about every Mac that installs macOS 27 on Monday.

This is not a claim that every Mac now drives 5K at 120Hz, and it is not a new display announcement; Studio Display XDR shipped in March. What changed with macOS 27 is the operating system explicitly listing higher-resolution ultrawide support, including 5K at 120Hz, as a feature of the release itself rather than something buried in a spec sheet. Apple groups it with other macOS 27 changes covered for the OS broadly in the iOS 27 release date piece and the event recap, both from the same week Apple detailed the new Mac desktops that ship September 22.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not stated whether the 5K at 120Hz ultrawide support requires macOS 27 specifically on the Mac side, or whether it also works on an M5 Max Mac Studio still running macOS 26 connected to Studio Display XDR. Apple has also not published which older Apple silicon Macs, if any, can drive a single Studio Display XDR at the full 120Hz rather than a lower refresh rate, and has not said anything about ultrawide third-party monitors beyond its own Studio Display line.

Anyone weighing the display and the Mac together has two dates to watch: macOS 27 Golden Gate on Monday, September 14, and the Mac Studio itself reaching general sale on September 22, the same week Apple detailed the chip driving four of these displays at once.
