Artificial intelligence has dominated the mobile application landscape for months, with conversational tools consistently holding the highest positions. Consumers have grown accustomed to seeing names like OpenAI and Google at the very top of the charts. But a major sporting event has officially disrupted that trend. With the annual college basketball tournament in full swing, sports fans are flocking to their phones to track scores and fill out brackets.
This sudden surge in fan activity means March Madness sports apps have unseated ChatGPT from the top of the App Store, pushing the leading artificial intelligence platforms further down the list.

Basketball fever reshapes the download charts
Just a few days ago, tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini held a firm grip on the highest download numbers. Claude even saw a significant spike recently, jumping from its initial ranking of forty-two earlier this year. Additionally, Perplexity launched its new Comet browser, briefly pushing Gemini down the list. However, the arrival of tournament season completely changed user behavior overnight.
Currently, CBS Sports holds the title of the most downloaded application on the Apple platform. Because of this massive influx of basketball fans, ChatGPT has fallen to the second position. Anthropic’s Claude now sits at number three.
Other dedicated sports platforms are mirroring this upward trend and seeing massive gains of their own. NCAA March Madness Live firmly holds the fourth spot, followed by Gemini at five and the ESPN Tournament Challenge ranking at number six.
Food and chatbots fall behind live sports
Before the basketball tournament began, the only real threat to the dominance of artificial intelligence tools came from a surprising place. Five Guys recently ran a fast-food promotion that temporarily allowed its application to compete directly with the top chatbots. Offering free food generated a highly noticeable spike in downloads. It provided a brief distraction, but it ultimately failed to claim the absolute number one spot from the established tech giants.
Apple itself has recognized the massive interest surrounding the basketball tournament. The company recently added highly requested bracket features to its own Apple Sports application right in time for the games.
It is clear that while generative text tools offer daily utility for many people, live sporting events still command immediate and overwhelming attention from mobile users looking to follow the action in real time.
