Netflix has added another layer to its ongoing effort to stop password sharing. The streaming service is now asking users to connect a unique email address to each individual profile on an account. This recent change started showing up on screens earlier this month. The company framed the update as a way to offer easier logins and better movie suggestions, but it clearly serves as an extra barrier for households sharing a single subscription.
Every adult profile now requires a unique email to function
The company confirmed it started rolling out this new requirement on June 15. Every standard profile now needs its own email address to function properly, even if all users live under the same roof. The only exception to this new rule is the kids’ profile section. That tier does not require an email and cannot be used to sign in directly.
Once an email is linked, a user can use it to log in, switch profiles, and manage personal settings. While the streaming platform pitches this as a helpful feature, many subscribers quickly noticed it makes account management more complicated. For example, people who create extra profiles just to keep different viewing algorithms separate will now need multiple email addresses to maintain them.
Some users have already found simple workarounds. Several people online pointed out that creating free disposable emails takes just a few minutes. Others mentioned that Gmail users can bypass the block by adding a plus sign and extra letters to their existing email handle.
Despite these workarounds, the move shows Netflix is firmly committed to squeezing more value from its 325 million paying customers. By adding these small hurdles, it hopes to turn more casual viewers into paying subscribers over time without alienating its core audience.
