Russia Cyber War Test

The test is the result of a draft law introduced to parliament last year called the Digital Economy National Program. It requires Russian ISPs to make sure they can still operate in case another country tries to isolate Russia online. One measure of the law includes Russia creating its own DNS in case its links to other servers are cut off.

You could say that this test is Russia’s response to NATO nations threatening Russia with sanctions due to the country’s cyber attacks against other countries, including the United States.

Russia also wants all internal network traffic to pass through routing points controlled by the government. These will act as filters so that internal traffic will continue to its destination, but foreign traffic will be cut off.
