Siri AI Has an Age Limit: Apple Says It Is Not Available to Users Under 13

Siri AI arrives in beta with iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, and Apple has published exactly one age rule for it: “Siri AI is not available to users under 13.” That single sentence sits in a footnote of Apple’s September 9 press release, and it is the only age restriction Apple has attached to its new assistant.

Apple has published no age rule for Apple Intelligence as a whole, no description of how the age is established, and no route for a parent to grant access. The footnote around that line deals with the beta status, the English-first language rule, the device requirement and the daily usage limits, which is why the age sentence has gone almost unread.

What else sits in the same footnote

The same block of small print carries the beta status across five operating systems, the line “Available in English to start,” and the daily usage limits that apply to server-side features “including but not limited to Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts.”

It also carries the sentence “Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future,” which is Apple confirming a paid tier without a price or a date. The age rule and the paid-tier rule are neighbours in the same paragraph of footnote text, and neither is stated in the body of any product page.

The age rules Apple does publish elsewhere

Apple normally pairs an age limit with a mechanism, either a support document or an account type. For Siri AI it published the number on its own.

What it changes for a family updating on Monday

iOS 27 is a free update for iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), so most family iPhones will be offered it. Apple Intelligence runs on a much shorter list: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, which includes the iPhone 18 Pro and its A20 Pro chip.

On any iPhone outside that list, Siri AI is not part of Monday’s update at all and the age rule never comes into play. Where the hardware does qualify and the person using the device is under 13, Apple’s published rule excludes Siri AI, and Apple has not said whether the rest of Apple Intelligence keeps working on that account.

Apple has also not tied the rule to its new child-safety work, which arrives in the same release and is described separately on its child safety pages. Our full event recap covers everything Apple announced alongside it.

What Apple has not said

  • How the age is determined, and whether it follows the birth date on the Apple Account
  • Whether a parent or guardian can grant access, and where such a setting would live
  • Whether features Apple lists under Siri AI, including Siri mode in Camera, Write with Siri and Call Context, fall under the same rule
  • Whether the rule varies by country or is applied worldwide
  • Whether the version of Siri that shipped before iOS 27 continues to work for those accounts
  • Any support document, FAQ or terms page that explains the restriction

iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14, with Siri AI in beta in English and five more languages due in October. Apple has published no release time for Monday and no support document for the update, so the age rule stands as one sentence in a footnote until it does.
