Spotify is expanding beyond music, podcasts, and audiobooks with a new feature that brings narrated magazine articles to the app. The company has started rolling out audio versions of long-form stories from major publications, giving users another way to consume content while commuting, working, or relaxing.
Spotify says the feature is available starting today for Premium subscribers with listening limits attached, while non-subscribers and additional users can purchase individual narrated articles for $1.99 each. The company has already curated more than 650 articles across different categories including entertainment, culture, fashion, music, and technology.
Spotify Partners With Major Publications
Spotify confirmed that the narrated articles come from well-known publishers including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, WIRED, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork. The company’s Audiobooks team produced the audio versions, and English support is available at launch.
Spotify explained that the goal is to make written stories easier to discover through the same recommendation system people already use for music and podcasts. That means users can find magazine features directly inside the app without switching between different platforms.
The announcement arrives shortly after Spotify revealed more experimental features for subscribers, including tools that allow users to remix and cover songs on the platform. The company clearly wants Spotify to become a broader entertainment app instead of staying focused only on music streaming.
At the same time, many users are still waiting for Spotify to reverse its temporary disco ball app icon change, which sparked mixed reactions across social media earlier this month.
