Tech executive Tim Cook recently traveled to Beijing as part of an official group led by President Donald Trump. Instead of representing Apple on a normal solo business trip, the CEO joined about a dozen top business leaders to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Elon Musk, along with executives from Boeing, Visa, and Meta, also made the journey. Back home, Cook left John Ternus in charge of the tech giant to keep its operations running smoothly.
The delegation aims to secure trade deals and discuss technology
The White House organized this visit to focus on trade, exports, and artificial intelligence. The group also plans to talk about global issues like the war with Iran. Chinese officials stated that their government hopes to work with the United States to build a relationship based on respect and shared benefits. This event stands out because it is the first time a sitting American president has visited the country in nine years.
Cook has practical reasons for attending the summit. He learned previously that turning down an invitation from the president can create unnecessary problems. In the past, refusing to travel resulted in tariff increases that hurt the financial standing of the company. By going on the trip, Cook makes sure that it stays on good terms with the current administration. Trump openly noted that he helps the tech brand when its leadership asks nicely.
Videos shared online show Cook walking next to Musk and saying hello to reporters at the Great Hall of the People. The dynamic between the two men brings some interesting history to the trip. A few years ago, Musk reportedly wanted to take over the top job at the iPhone maker himself.
Despite those old disagreements, both men are now traveling alongside several other executives to protect key business goals overseas. If the meetings go well, each participating brand could secure agreements that stabilize its international supply chains for the near future.
