Xcode 27.2 RC requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 and adds Simulate Fall to Device Hub

Apple’s Xcode 27.2 RC requires a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later and includes Swift 6.4 with SDKs for iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, macOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2. According to Apple’s release notes, the build also adds Simulate Shake, Simulate Fall and Simulate Memory Pressure to Device Hub, plus a GetCodeCoverage MCP tool for coding assistants.

The details are in Apple’s Xcode 27.2 release notes. This is the release candidate, so it is the build to test against before iOS 27.2 and the other 27.2 updates ship.

Requirements and device support

What is new in Device Hub

Device Hub gets the longest list of changes in this release (189236369). Four of them only work with simulators:

  • Slow Motion Animation
  • Simulate Shake
  • Simulate Fall
  • Simulate Memory Pressure

Simulate Fall is useful if your app responds to sudden motion, and Simulate Memory Pressure lets you check how an app behaves when the system is short on memory without needing a real device under load. Apple also fixed the Device > Simulate Memory Warning menu item, which did not work before (188326513).

The rest of the Device Hub list covers screenshots and settings:

  • A context menu for screenshots
  • Improved drag and drop compatibility for the screenshot icon
  • An option to hide device bezels
  • App settings for quit behavior for booted simulators, keyboard shortcut behavior, Secure Keyboard Entry, hardware keyboard simulation, and screen capture save location

Apple also fixed several input bugs. Modifier keys now go to the correct device when more than one device window is open, Device Hub no longer stops sending touch and button input after a period of inactivity, and Device Hub now supports input to iOS 17 Simulator devices.

GetCodeCoverage MCP tool

For the coding assistant, Apple added a GetCodeCoverage MCP tool (181141715). It reports code coverage from the most recent test result, and you can filter it by target or file. Apple also updated the RenderPreview MCP tool so it returns the list of available render destinations and lets the caller pick one (186442676).

Xcode 27.2 RC also carries the JSON based .xcproj project format, which we covered in our Xcode 27.2 beta report.

iPhone Duo known issues

Apple lists four Device Hub known issues, and three involve iPhone Duo:

  • Screenshots and recordings in iPhone Duo might be black for up to a few minutes after booting the device (187146039).
  • VoiceOver, the Accessibility Inspector and other accessibility tools cannot convey screen content on an iPhone Duo within Device Hub (187148389).
  • When switching between the inner and outer display of the iPhone Duo simulator, modifier keys such as Shift and Command might stop working (189465196). The workaround is to click with the mouse on the currently visible screen.

The fourth is that Device Hub cannot customize the text size for a device running iOS 18 or earlier (189261485).

On the fix side, Apple says that in the iPhone Duo simulator, an app using CameraCaptureAccessory could use both displays at the same time without an active camera capture session, and that is now fixed (190155353).

UIKit layout margins change

The iOS 27.2 SDK notes that ship with Xcode 27.2 include a UIKit change worth checking in your layouts. On iOS 27.1 and later, the default layout margins for a UIView are zero (186294594).

A view controller still provides its view with systemMinimumLayoutMargins, which vary with the presentation context. To have a subview of the view controller’s view inherit those margins, Apple says to set its preservesSuperviewLayoutMargins property to true. If content in a custom subview suddenly sits flush against the edges, that property is the first thing to check.

Other known issues

  • Mac Catalyst: projects that use APIs specific to iOS 27.1 show compile errors when building for Mac Catalyst. Apple’s workaround is to wrap that code in #if !targetEnvironment(macCatalyst) in Swift or #if !TARGET_OS_MACCATALYST in Objective-C (185924957).
  • SDK: the macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS SDKs incorrectly report 27.1 as a valid deployment target, and builds might behave unexpectedly if you use it (187160501).
  • Simulator: cloning a simulator device running runtime 27.2 might fail because of incorrect file permissions (188407822). Apple gives a find command that deletes the affected files in the source device’s data folder.
  • CarPlay: Device Hub support for CarPlay requires a physical USB connection, and iOS Simulator is not supported for CarPlay (179494052).
