How Many People Can You FaceTime At Once

FaceTime on an iPhone

If you’ve ever wondered how big a FaceTime call can get, here’s the straight answer. A lot bigger than most people expect. FaceTime isn’t just for one on one chats anymore. It can handle full groups, families, classes, and yes, chaotic friend calls.

The short answer

facetime guide

You can FaceTime with up to 32 people at the same time in a single Group FaceTime call.

What Group FaceTime actually looks like

Group FaceTime in iOS 12.1 on iPhone XS

When you’re on a Group FaceTime call, everyone appears in their own tile on the screen. The person speaking becomes more prominent automatically, so you’re not guessing who’s talking. If there are more people than fit on your screen, FaceTime stacks the rest in a row at the bottom and lets you swipe through.

If you don’t like the automatic highlighting, you can turn it off in Settings under FaceTime.

What you need for Group FaceTime to work

Here’s the thing. Not every device and setup supports full group video.

To use Group FaceTime with video, you’ll need:

  1. An iPhone 6s or newer, iPad Pro, or a supported iPad model
  2. iOS or iPadOS 12.1.4 or later
  3. A solid internet connection, either Wi Fi or cellular

Some older devices can still join, but they may be limited to audio only.

Also worth noting. Group FaceTime isn’t available in every country or region.

How to start a Group FaceTime call

Fun games to play over facetime

You’ve got two easy options.

From the FaceTime app

  1. Open the FaceTime app
  2. Tap New Call
  3. Add names, phone numbers, or email addresses
  4. Tap FaceTime Video or FaceTime Audio

That’s it. Everyone you added gets an invite.

From a group iMessage chat

If you’re already texting as a group, this is faster.

  1. Open the group conversation in Messages
  2. Tap the FaceTime icon at the top
  3. Choose video or audio

Everyone in the chat gets the call at once.

Adding people after the call starts

You’re not locked in once the call begins.

Any participant can add more people during the call by:

  1. Tapping the screen to show controls
  2. Opening the participant list
  3. Tapping Add People

As long as you stay under 32 total, it works.

Can Android users join?

Yes, with a caveat.

If you’re on iOS 15 or later, you can create a FaceTime link and send it to someone using Android or Windows. They’ll join through a web browser. It works well for basic video and audio, but some features like SharePlay or certain effects won’t be available to them.

Leaving a Group FaceTime call

Leaving is simple. Tap Leave or the red end button. The call keeps going as long as at least one other person stays connected.

The bottom line

FaceTime supports up to 32 people in a single call, which puts it firmly in group video territory. For families, teams, classes, or friend groups, it’s more than enough. And since it’s built into Apple devices, there’s nothing extra to install or manage.
