watchOS 27.2 beta 2 restores the Apple Watch App Switcher with a new screen gesture. Instead of double-clicking the Digital Crown, testers can press and hold the bottom of the display while an app is open to reach their recently used apps.

Apple’s developer release page confirms that watchOS 27.2 beta 2 is available, but Apple has not documented the App Switcher gesture in public release notes. The steps below therefore describe current beta behavior, not a guaranteed feature of the final watchOS 27.2 release.

The restored switcher is useful for moving between active tasks and removing an app card that has become sluggish. It also avoids taking over the Digital Crown action that changed in watchOS 27.

Use the watchOS 27.2 beta App Switcher

Install the beta only if you already accept the stability and battery risks of prerelease software. The gesture works from inside an app, so open any app before pressing at the bottom edge.

Open the restored App Switcher

The press must begin near the bottom of the display and remain in place long enough for the switcher to appear.

  1. Confirm that the Apple Watch is running watchOS 27.2 beta 2 or a later build that still includes the feature.
  2. Open an app rather than remaining on the watch face.
  3. Place a finger at the bottom of the display and press and hold.
  4. Release when the recent-app cards appear.
  5. Turn the Digital Crown or swipe to browse the cards, then tap an app to open it.

Remove an app from the switcher

Removing a card is appropriate when an app is slow or behaving incorrectly. There is no need to clear healthy apps routinely.

  1. Open the App Switcher with the bottom-edge press-and-hold gesture.
  2. Scroll to the app you want to remove.
  3. Swipe left on its card.
  4. Tap the X or remove control.
  5. Open the app again from the Home Screen and check whether it now responds normally.

Check your watchOS build

If the gesture does not work, the watch may be on watchOS 27.0.1, a different beta, or a later build in which Apple changed the behavior.

  1. Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General, then About.
  3. Check the watchOS version and build shown on the screen.
  4. Open Software Update to see whether an intended beta update is available.
  5. Read the current release notes before installing or changing beta channels.

Tips

Treat every gesture in prerelease software as changeable until Apple ships and documents the final version.

  • Do not install watchOS 27.2 beta solely to regain the App Switcher.
  • Keep the paired iPhone updated and backed up before testing watchOS beta software.
  • Start the gesture inside an app, not on the watch face.
  • Remove only a misbehaving app instead of clearing every recent card.
  • Recheck the gesture after every beta update because Apple can revise or remove it.

FAQs

Is the new App Switcher available in stable watchOS 27?

No. The restored switcher described here was found in watchOS 27.2 beta 2. Stable watchOS 27 does not provide the same bottom-edge gesture.

Why doesn’t double-clicking the Digital Crown open it?

watchOS 27 changed the previous Digital Crown behavior. In the 27.2 beta 2 implementation, the App Switcher uses a press and hold at the bottom of the screen while an app is open.

Can I downgrade the Apple Watch if the beta causes problems?

Apple Watch downgrades are not normally a user-serviceable process. This is one reason to avoid installing a watchOS beta on a watch you depend on every day.

Will this gesture be in the final watchOS 27.2 release?

It may be, but Apple has not promised it in public release notes. Beta features can change or disappear before release, so verify the final software before relying on the gesture.
