The Apple Watch Series 12 spans a 21 g range depending on which case you pick. Apple’s tech specs list the lightest configuration, a 42 mm aluminum cellular model, at 31.5 g and the heaviest, the 46 mm Night Blue ceramic, at 52.9 g. Titanium lands in between at 36.5 g and 44.9 g. All figures below come from Apple’s tech specs page for the Series 12.
Weight is worth a look this year because Series 12 adds a third material. Ceramic was not an option on Series 11, and the new Pearl White and Night Blue cases are both heavier and very slightly larger than the aluminum and titanium watches. Stepping up from 42 mm to 46 mm adds roughly 7 g in aluminum, 8.4 g in titanium and about 10 g in ceramic. Switching material at the same size costs more than switching size: at 46 mm, titanium is 5.4 g heavier than aluminum GPS and Night Blue ceramic is 13.4 g heavier.

One number on Apple’s page needs a flag. The aluminum GPS + Cellular models are listed at 31.5 g and 38.6 g, lighter than the GPS-only versions at 32.2 g and 39.5 g. Cellular models have historically weighed slightly more, not less. We are quoting the tech specs as published, and it is worth rechecking the live page before you buy on that difference alone.
Aluminum: the lightest Series 12
Aluminum is the material behind the $399 starting price and it is the only material offered in four finishes: Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Black and Space Gray. It is 100 percent recycled aluminum, and the watch as a whole is 40 percent recycled content by Apple’s count.
Aluminum models are the ones that get Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which Apple says is tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on the aluminum Series 11. At 32.2 g for the 42 mm GPS model, it is the lightest Series 12 by a clear margin, and the 46 mm at 39.5 g is still lighter than the 42 mm ceramic.
Titanium: sapphire crystal for 4 to 5 extra grams
Titanium comes in Radiant Gold and Natural, uses 100 percent recycled titanium and swaps Ceramic Shield 2 for a sapphire crystal front. The premium in weight is 4.3 g at 42 mm and 5.4 g at 46 mm over aluminum GPS.
Dimensions are identical to aluminum: 42 by 37 by 9.7 mm and 46 by 40 by 9.7 mm, so every band that fits an aluminum Series 12 fits a titanium one. Apple has not published a titanium price; the store page shows only the From $399 figure for the line.
Ceramic: the heaviest, and slightly bigger
The new ceramic case is the outlier. It adds 1 mm of height in both sizes, 1 mm of width at 46 mm and 0.15 mm of depth, coming in at 43 by 37 by 9.85 mm and 47 by 41 by 9.85 mm. Band fit ranges do not change.
It is also the only material where color changes weight. Pearl White is 41.7 g and 51.3 g; Night Blue is 42.8 g and 52.9 g, so the blue watch carries an extra 1.1 g to 1.6 g. Ceramic uses a sapphire crystal like titanium. Apple has not published a ceramic price, nor does the spec page say whether the ceramic case counts toward the 40 percent recycled figure, which Apple attaches to the aluminum and titanium models.
How Series 12 compares with Ultra 4 and SE 3
For context, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is 49 by 44 by 12 mm and 63.0 g, so even the heaviest Series 12 ceramic is 10 g lighter than the Ultra. At the other end, Apple’s SE 3 tech specs list the 40 mm at 26.3 g and the 44 mm at 32.9 g, which is within a gram of the 42 mm aluminum Series 12.
Series 12 pre-orders are open now with availability on September 18. If weight is your deciding factor, the 42 mm aluminum is the one to pick; if you want sapphire without the ceramic mass, titanium at 36.5 g is the middle ground.
