It depends on where you buy it. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray, in 12 countries and territories including the United States, Canada, Japan and Mexico. Everywhere else, the phones keep a physical SIM slot alongside eSIM, according to the wording of Apple’s press release.
This is a wider eSIM-only footprint than the iPhone 17 Pro generation, and it is the detail most likely to catch out travelers and people importing a phone from another market. Where the iPhone 18 Pro has no SIM card slot
Apple lists the following 12 markets as eSIM-only for both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. A phone bought in any of them will not accept a physical nano-SIM.

If your country is not on that list, the model sold there has a SIM tray and supports eSIM as well. Apple has not published a separate list of tray-equipped markets; the release simply names the eSIM-only ones.
What eSIM-only means if you travel or switch carriers
An eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro still works on any carrier that supports eSIM, and most major carriers in the 12 markets above already do. The difference is that you activate a plan through the carrier’s app, a QR code or the Settings app rather than by inserting a card.
Travelers who rely on buying a local prepaid SIM at the airport will need to use a local eSIM or a travel eSIM service instead. A US-bought iPhone 18 Pro cannot take a physical SIM from any country, because the slot is not there.
The eSIM-only distinction also shows up in Apple’s battery numbers. The quoted 36 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours for the Pro Max apply to the eSIM-only models; Apple has not published separate figures for versions with a SIM tray.
Should you buy the eSIM-only or SIM tray model?
For most people the question answers itself, because Apple sells only one version in each market. The eSIM-only model is the one you get in the US and Canada, and the tray model is what you get in the UK, India, Australia and the rest of the first-wave countries.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, with pre-orders opening Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and availability on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries. Apple has not said whether the list of eSIM-only markets will grow after launch.
