Duo FaceTime is an iPhone Duo feature that lets nearby friends join a FaceTime call from the phone’s 5.4-inch outer display while you stay on the 7.6-inch inner display, so two groups on opposite sides of one phone can be on the same call. Apple lists it as one of four features exclusive to iPhone Duo, which ships on Friday, October 23.
Apple has published only a one-line description of Duo FaceTime and no support guide, so the steps below follow that description and may differ slightly once iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Camera, display and connectivity figures are from Apple’s tech specs and press release.

How Duo FaceTime uses both displays
iPhone Duo has a camera on each side of the phone. Apple’s tech specs list a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display, with an f/2.2 aperture and 4K Dolby Vision video at 24 to 60 fps, and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner display at f/1.8 that records 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. Apple says both offer Center Stage, which keeps people framed as they move.

Duo FaceTime, in Apple’s words, lets nearby friends join a call on the outer display. Apple’s description implies the outer camera is pointed at those friends while the inner camera stays on you, but Apple has not said in so many words which camera feeds which group, or whether both feeds go out to the other end of the call at once.
The posable positions Apple describes for the Duo matter here. Apple says iOS responds to StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing positions, so a partly folded phone standing on a table could face one screen toward you and the other toward friends without anyone holding it.
How to use Duo FaceTime on iPhone Duo
These steps follow Apple’s description. Apple has not said where the Duo FaceTime control lives or whether it starts automatically when the phone is posed.
- Open the phone and start or answer a FaceTime call from the inner display.
- Stand the phone in a posed position, or hold it so the outer display faces the friends who want to join.
- Turn on Duo FaceTime from the call’s controls. Apple has not published the control’s name or location.
- The call appears on the outer display so the people on that side can see and take part.
- Apple has not said whether the outer 12MP camera captures them automatically; check the preview on your side of the call.
- To end Duo FaceTime, turn the option off or end the call. Apple has not said whether closing the phone ends it.
If Duo FaceTime does not appear
- Confirm the phone is on iOS 27.1 or later. Apple says iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and Duo FaceTime is not listed for other iPhones.
- Make sure the phone is open. Apple describes the feature as friends joining on the outer display while a call is under way, which points to the inner display being in use.
- Check the connection. Apple lists 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and Gigabit LTE on the Duo, but FaceTime video quality still depends on the network at both ends.
- If the outer display shows nothing, Apple has not said whether Duo FaceTime works in every posable position, so try holding the phone upright instead.

- Where the Duo FaceTime control lives, and whether it turns on automatically in a posed position.
- Whether Duo FaceTime works with Group FaceTime, SharePlay or FaceTime audio.
- Whether the outer display shows the full call interface or only the video.
- Whether closing the phone ends the outer-display session.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, October 23 from $1,999 for 256GB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, according to Apple’s press release.
