Duo Preview and Kid Cue are two iPhone Duo camera features that put the 5.4-inch outer display to work while you shoot with the rear cameras: Duo Preview shows the person being photographed a live view of the shot, and Kid Cue plays animations on that screen to hold a child’s attention. Both are listed by Apple as exclusive to iPhone Duo, which ships on October 23.
Apple has not published a support guide for either feature, so the steps below follow Apple’s published description and may differ slightly once iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. The display and camera figures are from Apple’s tech specs and press release.

Why the outer display makes these features possible
A folding phone has a screen on the outside of the closed body, facing the same way as the rear cameras. Apple’s tech specs put that screen at 5.4 inches and 460 pixels per inch, with more than 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro’s display, so it can act as a second viewfinder aimed at the subject.

Apple describes Duo Preview as a live preview of the shot for the subject and Kid Cue as playful animations to hold a child’s attention. Both rely on the rear 48MP Dual Fusion system, which has no telephoto lens, a point covered in our iPhone Duo cameras explainer.
How to use Duo Preview and Kid Cue on iPhone Duo
Both walkthroughs follow Apple’s description. Apple has not said whether either feature is on by default or where its control sits. Duo Preview first:
- Open the Camera app on the inner display, so the rear cameras and the outer display both face your subject.
- Choose Photo mode and frame the shot with the 1x Fusion Main or the 0.5x Ultra Wide.
- Turn on Duo Preview if it is not already showing. Apple has not published the control’s location.
- Ask your subject to look at the back of the phone. The outer display shows them the live preview so they can fix hair, pose or position before you shoot.
- Take the picture with the on-screen shutter or the Camera Control button. Apple says the Fusion Main has zero shutter lag.
Kid Cue is for photographing children who will not look at a lens. Apple has published only its one-line description, so the same caveat applies.
- Open the Camera app with the phone open and the rear cameras pointed at the child.
- Select Photo mode and frame the shot at 1x or 0.5x.
- Turn on Kid Cue. Apple has not said whether it is a mode, a toggle or an option inside Duo Preview.
- Playful animations play on the outer display, which faces the child. Apple has not said whether sound plays too.
- Take the picture while the child is looking at the animations, or pair it with Smart Take, which Apple says uses on-device AI to take the picture when everyone is posed.
If Duo Preview or Kid Cue does not appear
- Check that the phone is on iOS 27.1 or later. Apple says iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and neither feature is listed for other iPhones.
- Make sure you are shooting with the rear cameras from the inner display. Apple describes both features in terms of the outer display facing the subject, which the closed phone cannot do.
- Confirm you are in Photo mode. Apple does not list either feature under video.

What Apple has not said
- Where the Duo Preview and Kid Cue controls live, and whether either is on by default.
- Whether Kid Cue plays sound, how many animations there are, or whether they can be chosen.
- Whether Duo Preview works in video modes, Portrait mode or with the outer 12MP front camera.
- Whether the outer display preview mirrors the image or shows it as the camera sees it.
- Whether either feature will reach other iPhones in a later update.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phone is available Friday, October 23 from $1,999 for 256GB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, per Apple’s press release.
