Smart Take is an iPhone Duo camera feature that uses on-device AI to watch a group through the viewfinder and take the picture at the moment everyone is posed, so nobody has to count down or tap the shutter. Apple lists it on its iPhone Duo product page as one of four camera features only the foldable gets, and it arrives when iPhone Duo ships on Friday, October 23.
Apple has not published a support guide for Smart Take, so the steps below follow Apple’s own description and may differ slightly once iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Everything else here comes from Apple’s product page, tech specs and press release.

What Smart Take does, according to Apple
Apple’s product page describes Smart Take in one line: on-device AI detects when everyone is posed and takes the picture. The point is a group photo where the phone, not the photographer, decides the moment, and where the photographer can be in the frame.

The processing is on-device, on the A20 Pro’s dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says has twice the compute of the A19 Pro’s. Apple also says the 48MP Fusion Main camera has zero shutter lag, which matters for a feature whose job is timing. How to use Smart Take on iPhone Duo
These steps follow Apple’s published description. Apple has not said where the control lives, so treat that step as a guide until iOS 27.1 ships on the Duo.
- Open the Camera app with the Camera Control button or the Camera icon. Apple has not said whether Smart Take needs the phone open or closed.
- Choose Photo mode and frame the group: 1x Fusion Main for a small group, 0.5x Ultra Wide (120-degree field of view) for a wide one.
- Turn on Smart Take from the capture options. Apple’s page does not name the control’s location.
- If the subjects can see the back of the phone, Duo Preview shows them the live shot on the outer display so they can adjust their pose.
- Hold the phone steady, or stand it in one of the posable positions Apple describes, and wait. Smart Take takes the picture when it detects everyone is posed.
- Review the result in Photos, where Apple lists Photographic Styles 3, Spatial Reframing, Extend and an enhanced Clean Up tool.
If Smart Take does not take the picture
Apple has not published troubleshooting steps, so these are practical checks drawn from Apple’s description rather than an official list.
- Confirm the phone is on iOS 27.1 or later. Apple says iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and Smart Take is not part of iOS 27 on other iPhones.
- Make sure faces are visible. Apple says the feature detects when everyone is posed, so it needs to see the people in the frame.
- Check that you are in Photo mode on the rear camera. Apple does not list Smart Take among front camera or video features.
- Fall back on the shutter. Camera Control and the on-screen shutter still work.

- Where the Smart Take control sits in the Camera app, and whether it is on by default.
- Whether it works with the phone closed, open, or in a specific posable position.
- How many people it can track, and whether it takes one frame or several.
- Whether it works with the 12MP outer front camera or the under-display inner camera.
- Whether it will come to other iPhones in a later iOS update.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phone is available Friday, October 23 from $1,999 for 256GB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, according to Apple’s press release.
