IMAX has noticed that iPhone Duo’s unusually tall display is close to the shape of its full-height theater format, but the company is not ready to call a foldable phone a cinema. Responding to a question on X about bringing more 1.43:1 content to the device, the official IMAX account wrote, “love this for them… still not watching movies on a phone.”
The reply is playful, and the joke avoids promising any new distribution arrangement. It still draws an important line between aspect ratio and presentation. A screen can have a similar rectangular shape without reproducing the scale, projection, sound, mastering, or auditorium design that form the complete IMAX experience.
Apple promotes iPhone Duo as a strong device for movies and shows, with a 7.6-inch inner display, ProMotion up to 120Hz, HDR, and outdoor brightness up to 3,000 nits. None of those claims includes IMAX certification or a partnership.

The aspect-ratio comparison needs a caveat
Apple says the Duo’s inner and outer displays share the same aspect ratio so content can scale proportionally as the phone opens. However, Apple’s published display specifications do not include a numeric 1.4:1 or 1.43:1 label. Dividing the inner screen’s published 2670 pixels by 1878 gives about 1.4217, while the outer display’s 2034 by 1398 resolution gives about 1.455.

Why matching the shape does not remove black bars

Most streaming movies are not delivered in the full-height IMAX ratio, so a compatible screen shape does not guarantee a full display. Wider 16:9, 1.85:1, or 2.39:1 video can still produce unused space. IMAX’s own material explains that its 1.43:1 presentations are limited to certain movies, sequences, and venues. The company’s Oppenheimer guide, for example, identifies a limited group of theaters capable of showing the full 1.43:1 image on 15-perforation 70mm film. That distribution constraint is separate from whether a phone display has roughly comparable proportions.
What has not been announced
IMAX has not announced an iPhone Duo app, certification, content catalog, or partnership with Apple. Apple has not said that theatrical IMAX masters will stream to the phone.
