iPhone 18 Pro GPU: 40% Faster Graphics, and What It Means for Gaming

The A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro has a 7-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro. It is the headline graphics number from Apple’s announcement, and the one gamers will care about most.

Apple has not said whether the gain comes from more cores, higher clocks or the move to a 2-nanometer process, though the 7-core count and the 2nm process are both confirmed. Our story on the iPhone 18 Pro announcement has the full chip rundown.

What “up to 40 percent faster” covers

Apple’s figure is a peak comparison against the A19 Pro, and the company has not published the test behind it. “Up to” means real-world gains will vary by app and by how well each game uses the extra cores.

Apple’s release says nothing about ray tracing, upscaling or other GPU features. If there are architectural changes beyond raw speed, Apple has not detailed them.

Why the vapor chamber matters for long gaming sessions

A faster GPU only helps in games if it can hold its speed for more than a few minutes. Apple pairs the A20 Pro with a next-generation vapor chamber attached directly to the chip, which it says delivers about three times the cooling performance of the prior design.

Sustained load is where phones typically throttle, so the cooling claim is as relevant to gaming as the 40 percent figure. Apple has not published sustained-performance numbers, so how much of the gain survives a 30-minute session is something to test after launch.

Memory feeds the GPU too. Apple says the A20 Pro has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, which matters for streaming textures at high resolutions, though Apple has not tied that number to any specific gaming result.

What else the iPhone 18 Pro GPU is likely doing

Games are not the only workload that benefits. Features Apple announced alongside the chip include:

  • Cinematic effects in video at up to 60 fps.
  • 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording.
  • Image Playground with photorealistic images in iOS 27.
  • Upgraded Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls.

Apple has not said which of these run on the GPU rather than the Neural Engine or the image signal processor. Modern phone chips share this kind of work across all three, so the split is our assumption, not Apple’s.

Battery is the other half of the gaming question. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and the Pro Max at up to 45 hours on the eSIM-only models, but it has not published a gaming battery figure, and video playback is a much lighter load than a 3D game.
