Apple says Night mode is faster on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The claim sits alongside a 48MP Fusion main camera with a variable aperture that opens to f/1.48, the widest setting on any iPhone main lens.

Night mode has always been a waiting game. The camera holds the shutter open across a series of frames and merges them, which is why a countdown appears on screen and why a moving subject can smear. Cutting that wait is the practical improvement most people will notice.

What Apple has actually said about Night mode

Apple’s press release describes Night mode as faster, and that is the extent of the detail. There is no figure for how many seconds are saved, no before-and-after comparison with the iPhone 17 Pro, and no statement about whether the change applies to the Ultra Wide or front camera.

Apple also has not said which component is responsible. The new lens, the A20 Pro chip and updated processing are all plausible contributors, and the release does not divide the credit among them.

Why the f/1.48 aperture is the likely reason

A camera needs a certain amount of light to produce a clean image. Night mode gets there by stacking time, and a wider aperture gets there by letting more light through in the first place.

The jump from f/4 to f/1.48 is a little under three stops, which means roughly seven times as much light reaches the sensor at the wide setting. Every stop gained at the lens is a stop the camera does not need to recover by holding the shutter open, so the exposure can finish sooner.

  • Shorter captures reduce the chance that people in the frame move and blur.
  • Handheld shots are more forgiving because there is less time for the phone to drift.
  • The camera can use lower sensor gain for the same brightness, which usually means less noise.
  • Some dim scenes may not need Night mode at all if the wide aperture handles them in a normal exposure.

Where the A20 Pro may fit in

The A20 Pro pairs two 16-core Neural Engines for 32 cores in total, which Apple says doubles the AI processing of the A19 Pro, and it has 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Merging and denoising a burst of frames is the sort of work that benefits from both, though Apple has not tied those numbers to Night mode specifically.

Apple’s keynote coverage framed the camera changes as a package, with the aperture, manual controls and Smart Focus presented together. Treat the faster Night mode as part of that package rather than a standalone upgrade.

The phones go on pre-order Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and ship Friday, September 18, starting at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max. Until independent low-light testing appears, the safe reading is that Night mode is quicker but the exact gain is unknown.
