The iPhone 18 Pro costs $1,199 with 256GB, and the iPhone 17 started at $799 with the same storage according to launch reporting, a $400 gap. For that money the Pro adds the 2-nanometer A20 Pro, a variable aperture main camera, up to 36 hours of video playback against 30, and storage up to 2TB where the iPhone 17 stops at 512GB.
Apple did not launch a standard iPhone 18 today, as our explainer on why there is no iPhone 18 covers, so the iPhone 17 remains the non-Pro comparison point for anyone weighing the new Pro. Both phones have a 6.3-inch display, which makes the choice about the internals, the camera and the price.

What the extra $400 buys
The chip is the biggest jump on paper. The iPhone 17 uses the standard A19, while the 18 Pro’s A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2nm chip, with a 7-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and a vapor chamber attached directly to the chip. Apple has not published an A20 Pro to A19 comparison.

The camera is the second. The iPhone 17’s main camera has a fixed f/1.6 aperture and no dedicated telephoto lens. The 18 Pro’s six-blade variable aperture spans f/1.48 to f/4, with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app, Smart Focus tracking, a faster Night mode and Cinematic effects at up to 60 fps.
Then there is endurance and storage. Apple rates the 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback against up to 30 for the iPhone 17, charging reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes rather than 20, and the Pro is the only one of the two with 1TB and 2TB options.
Where the iPhone 17 is the smarter buy
The iPhone 17 is lighter at 177 grams, and Apple has not published a weight for the 18 Pro. It also has the same 6.3-inch screen size, a 48MP main camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide and an 18MP Center Stage front camera, the last two of which Apple did not change on the new Pro.
The iPhone 17’s front and Ultra Wide cameras are therefore a match on paper, and $400 is a large premium for a chip, a variable aperture, six extra hours of playback and bigger storage tiers. Apple’s own iPhone 18 Pro announcement puts the emphasis on camera, performance, battery and intelligence, and buyers who care about none of those get most of the phone for far less.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, September 18. Apple has not said whether the iPhone 17’s price changes now that the new Pro is on sale, and it has not published the 18 Pro’s 512GB, 1TB or 2TB prices.
