iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 preinstalled, according to Apple’s press release, rather than the iOS 27.0 that arrives on every other supported iPhone as a free update on Monday, September 14. The Duo reaches customers on Friday, October 23, five weeks after iOS 27 launches, and it is the only new iPhone this fall that Apple ties to a point release.
That detail matters because the Duo’s headline software, Split View, the posable positions and the upgraded StandBy, exists to serve a phone with two displays and a hinge. Here is what Apple has actually said about 27.1, what it has not, and how it affects a launch-day buyer.

Why the Duo is on a point release
Apple’s press release states the version number plainly: iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Apple’s tech specs page lists the in-box contents as an iPhone with iOS 27 and a 1 m USB-C cable, without the decimal, but the press release is the more specific document and we treat it as authoritative.

Apple has not explained why the Duo is on 27.1. The plain reading is timing. iOS 27.0 is finished and shipping on September 14, while the Duo does not reach anyone until October 23. A phone that launches five weeks after the .0 release would normally carry whatever update Apple had ready by then.
There is a second reading, and it is the more interesting one. The iOS 27 page Apple published for the September 14 update lists Siri AI, Siri mode in Camera, Photos tools, Safari tab organization, Notify Me and the rest, but not Split View, posable positions or an upgraded StandBy. Those features appear only in Apple’s Duo materials. Apple has not said whether they live in 27.1 specifically, but no other iPhone has the hardware to use them.
What iOS 27.1 brings to iPhone Duo
Apple’s press release and product page list these software features for the Duo:
- Split View, running two apps side by side on the 7.6-inch inner display.
- An upgraded StandBy, plus layouts that adapt to open, closed and posed positions (StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing).
- A redesigned Dynamic Island.
- A Call Context widget.
- Siri AI in beta, English first, with the same Apple Intelligence features as iPhone 18 Pro.
- Camera features including Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime, which use the outer display while the rear cameras are active.

Both phones share the A20 Pro, but the Duo’s version has a job the 18 Pro’s does not: a custom display engine that drives both screens at once, according to keynote coverage. Apple has not said whether that work is what 27.1 carries. See the A20 Pro in iPhone Duo for the chip side.
What a launch-day buyer should expect
If you pre-order on October 16 and receive the phone on October 23, it arrives on 27.1 and you will not need to update before using Split View or the posable layouts. Siri AI is in beta in English at launch. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October, which may or may not coincide with the Duo’s own October date; Apple has not tied the two together.
One feature will not be ready on day one. Apple Pencil (USB-C) works on both Duo displays, but the press release says support arrives later in 2026. - When iOS 27.1 will reach iPhones other than the Duo, or whether it arrives before October 23.
- Which features are new in 27.1 compared with 27.0. Apple has not published a changelog.
- Whether Split View, the posable positions or the upgraded StandBy are technically part of 27.1 or of the Duo’s own software layer.

- Whether Apple Pencil support will ship as a point release, and which one.
