iPhone Duo has four camera features that no other iPhone offers: Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime. All four depend on the same thing, a second display that faces the person in front of the camera while you frame the shot on the big inner screen.
Apple’s product page lists the four features as exclusive to the Duo, and each gets a one-line description rather than a full breakdown. Here is what Apple has said about each, and what it has not, alongside the rest of the camera hardware covered in our iPhone Duo preview and the live announcement details from our event live blog.
Smart Take waits until everyone is ready
Smart Take uses on-device AI to detect when everyone in a group shot is posed, then takes the picture itself. It is aimed at the usual group-photo problem, where someone is still adjusting when the shutter fires.

It pairs with a Main camera that Apple’s press release says has zero shutter lag, so the moment Smart Take picks should be the moment it captures. Apple has not published which cameras Smart Take works with, how many people it can track, or whether it can be tuned or turned off per shot, and it is listed as a Duo-exclusive feature, so do not expect it on the iPhone 18 Pro.
Duo Preview and Kid Cue put the outer display to work
Duo Preview shows a live preview of the shot on the outer display so the subject can see how they look while you shoot. On a normal phone only the photographer sees the frame; here the person being photographed gets a mirror of it.
Kid Cue plays what Apple calls playful animations on the outer display to hold a child’s attention while you take the photo.
Both features rely on the outer display being visible to the subject while the rear cameras are in use, which in Apple’s description happens when the phone is open and you are composing on the inner display. Apple has not said whether either works with the front cameras or with the phone closed.

Duo FaceTime turns the phone into a two-sided call
Duo FaceTime lets nearby friends join a FaceTime call on the outer display. Someone sitting across from you can be part of the call without crowding behind your shoulder, since the phone shows the call on both sides.
This pairs with two other items on Apple’s tech specs: Center Stage on the rear camera, and a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display alongside the under-display FaceTime camera behind the inner screen. Apple has not published which camera Duo FaceTime uses for the second person, or whether the feature requires both people to be signed in.
What Apple has not published
Apple’s press release confirms the Duo ships with iOS 27.1 rather than iOS 27.0, and adds a Camera Control button with a Siri Camera mode, but it does not expand on the four exclusive features beyond the product page. Apple has not said whether they work in third-party camera apps, or whether Smart Take has any manual override beyond the normal shutter button.
None of the four is coming to the iPhone 18 Pro, which gets its own camera additions in the form of a variable-aperture main lens and manual controls, detailed in our iPhone 18 Pro camera explainer. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on October 23, and we will test each of these features once review units arrive.
